Gas fires may be cleaner they may be more efficient but they can never never replace the ambiance that a real fire has.

horses for courses. Resident here we have both gas and an open fireplace, plus a couple of oil filled rads fitted with timers in odd places like the kitchen and music room. Would not be without either. The gas is instantaneous heat when needed, and we use it during the transition to/from winter..and despite comments seen here to the contrary it is a catalytic and does not smell. The log fire we use daily in Jan/feb and that knocks spots off any other form of heating we have tried, the whole house seems to benefit, its old fashioned and friendly and does wonderful toast!. Yes there are ashes and logs to saw up, but what are we supposed to be, helpless and lazy? best regards tonyE

I must admit Ive bought one of Daves fires and wouldnt be without it.100% efficient compared with 50% open fire and 60/70% woodburner In these days of energy conservation Give me Gas fires any day.Woods going up all the time (And mostly up the chimney)At least when I batten down the hatches so to speak I know the heat im paying for is in the house not up the chimney.
