Hello all,

I have brought my fondue set from the UK (yes, I know, very Generation Game!), but sadly I can't use it because I cannot get meths anywhere for the little burner.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find some, or if there is some other safe chemical I can use in the burner?

Thanks x

You could try white spirit, could be a bit messy with the smoke so would suggest outdoors or is that obvious.

In England I have bought it at chemist shops and B&Q.

It would not be wise to try white spirit which is an organic (paraffin- derived) solvent.

Kitty - have you tried a chemist/pharmacy? - because methylated spirits is simply methyl acohol.

Hi guys, yes I have tried a number of pharmacies here but no luck.

Anybody out there know anything about chemistry...what if I tried the zippo lighter fuel? The burner has that wadding stuff inside it which I guess is similar to the stuff inside a zippo. Any thoughts?

Kitty - shame you can't get Meths.

I do have a Chemistry degree and would not recommend white spirt because of it's toxic and irritant properties. Inhalation of the vapour can cause drowsiness, dizziness and nausea. Skin contact can result in dermatitis.

The closest alternative is ethyl alcohol (ethanol) - 100% pure vodka is the best example - but expensive!!

Hi Paul...thanks for your help...and thanks as well to Jock for answering.

So Paul...do you think you can actually get ethanol anywhere or should I just buy a cheapo bottle of vodka and be done with it?

All this cos I love cheese!!!!!

LOL - the problem I now have is whether to do a cheese one first or go straight to the Nigella Lawson toblerone version...

Either way I'm a happy bunny now!
