Pipie

I have Osteo arthritis and can definitely say that in the 4 years I have lived here in TRNC my condition has not worsened and in fact seems to have improved greatly to what it was in Uk. I can only put this down to the climate here. Yes, I do have bad days especially in the winter months here but I hardly have to take anti-inflammatory pills. I am not saying it wil stay this way in the future as I know a hip replacement is on the cards for me but here's hoping I won't need it any time soon.

I don't live there but before I had my 2 knee replacements I could hardly walk upstairs here in the UK but when on holiday there I walked up to the top at Hilarion castle twice, that was in December when it isn't too hot, I also sleep a lot better.

When I'm in the UK I have a constant 'pain in the neck'

In the TRNC it suddenly dissapears.

I'm really pleased that my sister in law doesn't want to come and visit us for a holiday.

I have had a bad back for a few years now, when I was in England I was always in pain and having to take alot of painkillers. Since being here I have had hardly any problem until now as the weather is turning cooler. I believe the warm weather helps.

Vit D is\a powerful healer.Get as much as you can take. Sadly it is also an aging for the skin healer. Do what the ausssis do slip slop slap. I find the sun really helps pain. Cant sit in it with my irish skin, but the water here contains a lot of lime and dries the skin so much.Girls moistrize xxx

The sunshine certainly helps my knees and hips! If you don't like taking "chemicals" try giving rosehip capsules a try. In trials they gave much more pain relief than paracetamol and are totally natural. I was taking them in UK but haven't needed them since I've been out here. Sainsbury do their own brand version whcih aren't too expensive.

Coachie.

Glucosamine 1500 has very good reports. Does your arthritus remain more pain free in the warm climates ?

Non Steriodal anti-inflammatory's like Ponstan (Mefenamic acid) or Voltarol (diclofenic sodium) are wonderful for arthritic type pain.

These are quite safe to take short term but if taken long term safer to be taken with a drug called Ranitidine (Zantac).

Overdose or abuse of these drugs can lead to gastric bleeds. Also they cannot be taken by anyone who is asthmatic.

Chris, mess 13 - I used to take Ranitidine (which I'm sure you know can now be bought over the counter in UK), trouble is, you can become immune to its effects after a while.

For many years now I have been taking Lansoprazole (Omeprazole) and it has given me a new lease of life!

Is this where you tell me it can have funny side-effects?

Coachie mess 10 - same as you. I had a knee replacement recently, looking forward to having the other one done!

Here in Germany there is a very short waiting list, and after 2 weeks in dock they sent me for 3 weeks to a spa-hotel for rehab. Fantastic!

Hi, I am in my late 40's and for the past two years have suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis in both knees and various other parts of my body. I am on medication to control the advancement of the disease which was prescribed to me by my excellent Doctor at Cyprus Life Hospital in Lefkosa. The medical treatment has stopped the consistent pain but there is no cure for this disease.

The heat helps me a great deal which is now more obvious than ever as at the moment I am in the UK and the cold and damp has brought all of my stiffness back. My Doctors here have all stated to me that being in a hot climate is much better for Arthritis sufferers but they have told me that there is no scientific proof to back this up this claim as it is very difficult for them to quantify, it just seems to be it something both medical people and sufferers know works.

I will be returning home to Cyprus very soon and I look forward to being stiffness free once again.

Regards Carole

Hiya Carole I hope you have many pain free days. I swear by Aloe Vera. The strongest I can get. Its expensive here but people bring it for me from UK. Its none to cheap there in fact more than a bottle of good Chablis. However the results from MS Me Arthritis etc are remarkable. Also a great hangover cure. Remember here in Feb its so cold and so damp so be prepared. I have gone off HRT and various pain killers since being here but wont give up the Aloe. Even proved to help IBS. Keith will I get the green muscle tablets in UK xx

Liz,

Holland and Barrett ! Boots ! - You name it...

The lady at AYDIN Chemist near me (next to Taj Mahal) might stock them - she does quite a bit of 'natural' stuff

It is mainly for keeping joints working well, rather than pain relief, but of course if your joints are easier to move - they hurt less!

p.s. it's green MUSSELL extract....You wouldn't want to end up with green MUSCLES would you? - you'd look like 'thingy' - that big bloke...

Pipie..the warm weather does help.I have just come back from Egypt(31c) and I had no trouble.Sat at the bar most of the time...seriously though the warm does give relief.

Kaiserphil..I have to take Omeprazole to protect my stomach. I take numerous pills because of my Heart op. and my knees.Hope to have both done eventually. My wife says I ought to see a vet because only horses have more trouble with their legs than humans.I think she was implying that I ought to be put down, which is what they do with dodgy horses.Must speak to her about that!!!

Lilli..You can buy the exrract of green mussels from any health shop i.e.Holland &Barrat or most chemists.I get most of mine off the internet...

Diamorphine, laced with copious quantities of beer is the answer, the first kills the pain and the latter dilates the blood vessels making life a little easier to tolerate!

For anyone to suggest diamorphine as a solution for arthritis, even in jest, is just plain daft. Take no notice.

MsGarnett

I wish you well for February, the only way will be up after then I am sure, I can empathise with you completely, hopefully I won't be needing op for a few years. I have Oesteoartrittis in both hips but left is worse. and my back is affected sometimes.
