Does anyone know what day & time I can go in to apply for the paper you need to get married? I already have my birth certificate here but think you need to get a paper that says they have checked and I have never been married before? I have been trying to call them in the mornings but they never seem to pick up!

Thanks

Nat

I'm pretty sure they open from 7.30am, Shakespeare St, Nicosia though not sure whether they take TRNC holidays as well as UK ones so go on Tuesday to be on the safe side.

Thanks, I think I will just have to get up at the crack of dawn and go and see what they say, no doubt there will be lots of trips backwards and forwards until I finally get the paper, hopefully not but going by past experience there it's hardly very organised!

By the way:

Does anyone know when you get married in Turkey if the marriage is also automatically registered or also valid in the UK if one of you is a British Citizen or if you have to apply for a marriage certificate/also register the marriage in the UK aswell?

Thanks

Hi Nat

First of all congratulations on your forthcoming nuptuals.

I suggest you check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Website if you are a British Citizen,

http://www.fco.gov.uk the section : Travel and Living abroad, most info is covered there. The certificate that says you have not been married comes from the UK, it is not something you can get immediately at the British High Commission, I would give them a call before you traipse up there, may save you some time.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi Nataless

When we got married a few years ago we were told that we need to get a letter from the high commision to say that I (being British, my husband is Cypriot) was free to marry. When we went there they told us that the letter does not exist and that they would certainly never hand out such a letter. They said that officially your bands are supposed to be posted in the Uk if you are Bristish. We went to a solicitor in Girne in the end who wrote a letter for us saying that we were both free to marry and we had to have 2 letters from the Muhtar, one stating where we lived and the other confirming that we lived together. Good luck and congratualtions. x

Re msg 1

firstly Congratulations for the future ! ..

You marriage cert WILL be recognised, but you will need for it to be officially translated and notorised - check with the UK High Commission.

Even if they say that isn't necessary [NOW] - it IS .. to do with anything if you are planning to come / live in the UK [ say on a spouse Visa for your Husband]

We had an application for a Visa for my step-son rejected -because of a non-notorised translation - even though the notorised 'bit' isn't delineated as necessary ..

IF the Marriage Certificate will be in English - GREAT ... ours from the RoCy IS in English and has been accepted - no problem - even outside Cyprus.

Our marriage certificate is in english & our documents had to notarised by the TRNC consulate in London & then sent out to TRNC. This we were told is what makes it legally recognised.
