Beyti's restaurant in 'tin pan alley' was the place of choice for the annual Christmas bash by the Watermill bridge club. Mezes was just assorted cold salad and garlic bread with no garlic and the main to be mixed kebab/grill. Warning signs stared me in the face and was on full alert! I asked the Nigerian waiter whether I could have grilled lamb chops instead of the mixed kebab/grill which he okayed. They arrived medium having specifically told him 10 seconds a side, they never listen! Bill time comes and he charges both for the mixed kebab/grill and the lamb chops which I refused and suddenly he 'no speak English'. Strange that, as the official language of Nigeria is English! The club paid up wanting to avoid a scene, damn them as I was well up for it! Leave this place well alone!

Brinsley

maybe you should have made it clear that there would be no extra charge for this. We was charged 1.50 sterling for a fried egg instead of the usual hard boiled at a hotel in Girne some time ago, hard boilled eggs every morning for 10 days tend to get a binding, pardon the pun.

For most Christmas Party Lunches, it is usual to agree on the menu (and who is having what and whether there are any special dietary needs) well before you all arrive on the night. If they paid up for 'a quiet life' and couldn't be bothered to thrash it out, I don't think it is really fair to name and shame the restaurant over it. Would be different if you ate there and all got food poisoning.

We have been to Beyti's and had a fabulous time, food was great and plenty of it, there was 8 of us and we had the mixed grill which comes on a long wooden platter nearly 2 metres long, some in our group took doggy bags home for their pets there was so much.

I agree with Mindy. Beytis is one of my favourite restaurants in Girne. Cannot fault it in ANYTHING!

The nigerian waiter, by the way, speaks fluent turkish, Do you?

Totally agree with messages 5 & 6.

Never been dissapointed at Beyti's. And the fact that it's open 24 hours is a bonus. Lovely food all the time, plenty of it, good prices and never been over charged. Love the place, all our lot do !

I have to agree with Richard (Brinsley) on this one.

I have used Beyti's for around 5 years and the problems only started with the Nigerian waiter, who almost ALWAYS deals with us Brits, probably as he speaks such good english which has been pointed out already.

Over the last year or so the bill has always been padded with extras which were never ordered. ESPECIALLY if you are in a large group and it's more difficult to be precise, and as the bill is being split many ways we let it go a couple of times.

But when it is just 2 or 4 of you eating he will still try it on, well no more which is a pity as I like the place. Maybe if we do go again I will insist on a different waiter..........who knows.

AS for direction if you are walking leave town past the Colony hotel (on the right) and turn first right. It's on the right about 50 mtrs down that road.

Have once again to disagree with Brinsley you are bang out of ^^^^^ old son as Beyti's is one of the best around, me thinks it was not as bad as you say, probably had to wait too long for your amber nectar mate so got the hump, maybe you and your bridge buddies expected too much cos Beyti's are not rip off as you make them out sorry but not a good post :(

And cant resist the dig - with the amount of time you spend trawling this board pipie you should know where tin pan alley is , oops banned again - sigh :(

I have never been so cant comment but one of our waiters from the brasserie went to work there and loved it. Even thogh he worked till 5am. Best thing for him as he was so good looking that no woman was safe from him. He told us all the tales but never one about ripping off thats against thier nature. Many people I know go there and I have never heard a bad word xxIm sorry Richard that you had this experience but Im sure it can be rectified x

I had a problem at Beyti's a couple of years ago. They put an 'extra' on the bill and I went to query it. The guy at the cash desk was all set to argue it out until the waiter came and spoke to him, probably pointing out we were regulars and suddenly it was all apologies and bill reduced to correct price. Mistakes can happen.

The worst place I've been to was Sevkets where we weren't given a written bill, just a total, which was way above what I'd made it. I made him write it all out and prove he was trying to overcharge us by more than 30tl. If you do this to several customers a night you're onto a nice little earner!

I've never been to Beyti's so can't comment but a general comment on NC restuarants, why is it that I'm not surprised that you have to really check the bill?

my husband and i have been to beyti twice. the first time we were not impressed with the food and decided not to go again, however we were persueded to go again by friends and the second time the food was awful. my husband called the waiter and told him his meal was dreadful, he did not wish to eat it, and he did not intend to pay for it. in their defense they did knock the cost of my husband's meal off the bill. we have not been in since. we do however have several friends who think it is great. speak as you find, i say, we all have places we love, and places we don't.

I do think folk should complain there and then at the restaurant if the food is not up to standard, and only put negatives on this board if they have been overcharged and had poor meals on more than say two occasions.

These restaurants can lose so much custom overnight when it could have been avoided .

I say to Betyi's offer Richard a free meal and then Richard can again review the restaurant on board for us all to see!!!!

I hope pointing out you were regulars was not the reason for the apologies, but rather that they accepted they had made a mistake and the same apologies would have been meted out whether you were regular, non, or tourists.

I love Beyti and have always had good food and good service. I doubt they would care if a few expats stopped going there as it is always packed with locals.

Perry.... Directions to Efendi.

From Colony Hotel go up the hill towards the roundabout.

Immediately after you pass The Old Grapevine turn left.

Look out for another left turn after about 100 yards. You will see The Efendi House ahead of you.

I agree DD, I have never had a problem with Beyti, been going since we came here a year ago now and they do the best Lahmacun, soups and cheese pide on the island at prices that are more than reasonable!

We were in there just the other day and served by the manager, you should have asked for him, as regular customers we get excellent service and I took my family there in the summer for the mixed grill and it was huge we couldnt even finish it between 5 adults!!! They also are always willing to put things in a doggy bag for you when you cant finish it! Dont be so easily lead forum members one misunderstanding or bad experience does not mean the place should be avoided!!! I will still be going thats for sure!

Natx

PS I think they are also the only place open 24 houırs a day!

racoonchic/Msg33:

'New Zealandish', or whoever - if you you get a foul meal anywhere, or ripped off, you're bound to feel cheated and wanting to warn others.

However, reading through all the posts on this thread, there seem to more folks who've had a good deal than complainants!

All I can say is it went the length of a table for 8 people or 4 couples facing each other, maybe it was a little shorter bit at least 4 feet and I am sure it went from end to end of table. Do I sound like a fella exaggerating on size

Beyti's has been there a long time so I dont think one complaint on here will effect their ratings, as it is popular with both brits and locals alike. Always the same one visit one complaint instead of dealing with it like a gentleman at the time. Nothing has changed here you still have the the right to ask for the police to attend as judge and jury if you feel that strong about the situation. This usually resolves everything either before or after police have attended. Keep going Beyti need somewhere to go on way back from airport that remains open.
