have any of the members been asked to provide a life certificate for the statutory old age pension ? my pension is suspended until I can send a life certificate to the pension service at Newcastle. I have a friend in France who is able to ask at the village police station for confirmation that he is still alive, anybody know if our police would be acceptable ? ( not actually existing that is ) or will I have to go to the High Commission ? any help would be appreciated.

Message 2 - if you draw a state pension - then no NI from an individual is required. As for life certificates - would you want the penion service to continue paying tax payers money - when people have passed away. It does happen when peoples deaths are not reported and relatives continue to draw it - hence the DWP have to carry out checks.

oh i see know why but they do not check how many children in eu countries have. Thank you for the info but it does beggar belief.i cannont think of that in any bad way when you die and report it as a woman you get widows pension (does that still exist) as a man nothing. Brig who have to pay for many a year till you draw pension or please correct me does everybody get it wether you pay NI or not. If you stay at home and look after kids you donot payNi but you still get a state pension. So its a right. Now I understand the amount you get is based on what you have paid in. I never knew that. Sorry xxx. I understand if they do not repoer the deaths and claim but they will be found out xxx

Hi lilli,

I have a pension in my own right but to receive this I paid contributions for over 40 years. If you stayed at home and looked after your children you did not get your contributions paid when my children were small. I understand this has now changed and women today get credits. If you stayed at home and never paid any contributions at all, you could claim on your husbands contributions, if you became a widow or a married couples pension if he is still alive but you cannot receive a pension in your own right at 60. As men do not retire until they are 65, you would have to wait until he reached this age before claiming the couples pension. I am older than my husband and if I did not have a pension in my own right I would be 70 before being able to get a couples pension. So I am pleased that I paid my contributions.

Hi to the lovely butlers wife. God girl you are lucky or like me with a chef and dlo not get fed.I understand what you are saying it told me I had 39 years full stamp . I have never not worked. We did not have maternity leave but what we had was the option to pay a small stamp. Most of us did as our husbands had the tax relief Now they have it all. I get so upset reading thing like they now do not beleive you die but pay out to all and sundry. Hope you are both well I wish you a very happy evening. Im sorry for my outburst xxxxx

I worked for 40 years but never paid marrried woman's contribution as it was called then, I am the same age as my husband and as I couldn't have a pension in my own right I had to wait until we were both 65. It didn't bother me as I had the extra money when the children were growing up and needed it more then.

My Husband was asked for life certificate last summer,he took passport etc into our solicitors and they drafted letter with official stamp,we forwarded this to Newcastle and hey presto, pension reinstated.Think solicitor tried to charge 50tl,hubby negotiated him down to 25tl,the cost of proving you're still breathing huh?

The best thing to do would be to:-

Go to your doctor and ask them for a certificiate to proof who you are and you are still ok, get the document faxed over straight over.

If not

Go to the British High commission with your passport and ask them to write a certificate for you, bring your passport and any details of your proof tell them that its extreamly important and you need some form of confirmation that your still well and fine and get that faxed over. They should be able to help. Ask to speak to the British Commioner in person. Do bring all your ID.

Having worked for the Met Police I was often asked to complete/sign Certificate of Life forms from people living in the UK who drew pensions from their home countries.

You can get the following people to sign and stamp the form:-

Police Officer

Court official

Embassy or Consulate

Official of a registry office

Solicitor

Doctor

Bank Manager

I would take the form and your passport to the police station and ask them to do it.

If you need any further assistance........please give me a call.

Message 5;

Currently a woman with enough contributions at age 60 can draw a state pension from 25% - 100% (depends how many years in her working life she has had enough contributions paid). A woman married does not have to wait until 65 unless all her pension is to be based on her husbands record she would then have to wait until he was 65. (A woman who qualifies for a state pension can defer if she wishes and earn increments while waiting for her spouse to reach 65 or claim it earlier if she wishes).

Women who looked after children for example can qualify for Home Responsibilities.. while they recieve Child benefit. They are not awarded credits but for every full year it reduces the number of years you require to qualify for state pensions e.g. Working years required 40 for 100% state pension-HRP for 16 years would mean the lady in question would only require 34 years where she had to have contributed to get an 100% pension.

There will be changes under the Pension Reforms 04/10

Many Thanks, for the helpful information..........I have all of the forms that are required to send back to the pension service.

Once again, thank you Judy, London Cypriot and Jenfarrall.

I'll go to the B.H.C. when they re-open
