~SNP have not, so far, got enough support as only about 25% support a referendum and 20% in

favour of full independence. So we look like staying in the Union (for better or worse)

Every map I have looked at has a 'cut along the dotted line' already in place. Its just that no one has had the guts to get their scissors out.

Never mind giving the sweaties a referendum we in England should just send them on their way together with their dodgy banks that we in England would no longer have to prop up with our money.

Scotland population 5 million.....................Taxpayers 300,000

The fact that they think they could manage on their own is laughable.

Just remember that the Union was all about England wanting to join with us, not the other way about. Your old queen Lizzie the Dyke could or would not produce an heir or spare so your lot asked our King James VI to take on your scabby crown. Result King James I of UK

Most of the productive oil & gas in the North Sea opposite Scotland are actually in the Norwegian Sector so it doesn't belong to Scotland or the UK as it's leased off the Norwegians by private companies (i.e BP Amoco, Philips etc) and the only input onshore is refinary & despatch. It's myth that's put around that the Scots would be rich with oil! The only oil that they are rich in is with deep fried mars bars....

i am no scot but surely there is more than 300,000 taxpayers in scotland everyone pays some sought of tax wheather indirect or no,it is not vat alcahol fuel tabbaco car you name it, probably kids pay some sought of tax it on vid games.pensioners even over and above there state pension if they have a supplemtry one , and the oil and gas has bought a lot of royalties in last 35 years, and some say there is still a trillion quids worth there ,but they would not have been able to support rbs, hbos, dumfermaline bs ,and prevent liquidation and collapse of uk banking system it is not fair to imply scotland has been a burden to england we need them as much as they need this, however i think that if scotland went independant without oil it would not be able to service it share of national debt epecially with liabilities of rbs hbos dunfermaline with the prospect of it turning even sourer than it is allready is judge by there shares ,in the past if had all oil royalties no tax in scotland

GIANT BS everyone knows royalties paid to uk but oil piped to scotland in uk and i doubt hey would have piped some of oil to berwick so england got royalties even what is left of american oil comps in venezuela do not pipe back to yankyland they land it in venez and pay royalties to chavez it is a fact if we wanted oil we would have had to pay royalties to scots and they would have been rich, i really do think some of you people out there are racists bigots and surprised you are living in foriegn country and another thing we have some of our best solders come from scotland what fighters and warriors just show them braveheart and they fight anywhere mind you i still think we would have had a better footy team if were uk team with likes of ryan giggs an some of other scots players and we woul have had george best , now lets grow up and stop all this spitefull crap about scotland and how it is drain on resourses, and rubbish about mars bars its offensive

Arguments for Scottish Independence.

Britishness is dying. Scotland has its own parliament, its own laws and legal system. National feeling and self-confidence are high. It is time to take the next step.

Semi-independence is unsatisfactory. Fiscal powers and economic control remain at Westminster. Independence will allow Scotland to cut business taxes (like Ireland) to promote economic growth.

Other small countries like Norway and the Republic of Ireland are more successful and more dynamic. An independent Scotland will have the tools to match them.

Independence would give Scotland clout where it matters: a seat at the UN and in the EU Council of Ministers. Scottish interests, eg. fisheries and agriculture, are poorly served in Brussels by UK ministers.

Relations between Scots and English are deteriorating. Independence would free Scotland from dependency and England from resentment. An amicable no-faults divorce is better than a bickering marriage.

Arguments against Independence

The Union has served both countries well for 300 years. Devolution is a young experiment, and it is too soon to judge it.

There is a gap between public spending in Scotland (£40bn) and revenue raised there (£27bn). A Scottish government would have to choose between higher taxes and cuts in public services.

Scotland has more influence in Brussels as part of the UK than it could have as an independent state.

The integrated British economy is more capable than an independent Scotland would be of meeting the challenges of globalisation. Likewise, having independent defence and security structures would overstrain Scotland's resources.

Scots should recognise that devolution has put England at a disadvantage, and should press for reforms to the way Westminster works. Satisfying English grievances would put the marriage back on an even keel. Divorce is unnecessary and would be painful.

If the English can't even be recognised, then there is no hope for Scotland getting independence!

Scotland could not afford the bill for security and defence alone.

The English in England haven't even got a First Minister or their own house to debate issues in. The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish peoples should be pleased they have what they have got and stop moaning!
