Sorry Peter, can't hear you!

You'll have to find a referral from your local pharmacist or Doctor.

Muhyi Said, Lefkosa. His shop is on the right opposite a few jewellers nearly at the Ledra Street crossing, just before you turn down to the old quarter and the crossing.

Definitely Mr Said. His address is actually Kyrenia Street in Nicosia, and the phone number is 0392 227 1992.

He speaks good English, very helpful, nothing too much trouble and supplies hearing aids at excellent prices, and has a good maintenance service. He will even accept hearing aids delivered by taxi if folk can't get up there, but of course, you need to get there for yourself for a test. He is not THAT talented to do it from afar.

No one on the island to beat him.

Yes, eveyrone is different and has different needs, and there are all kinds of hearing aids, but my husband has got those digital ones which are capable of blocking out background noise (to a degree). His first one was in U.K, then he got another inAustralia and then another here in Lefkosia (would you believe our lovely dog chewed up the one that 'Im downstairs left on the settee! Very expense chew, that was.

Cost? His last one cost around £400 which is extremely cheap compared to U.K, and the good thing is that a digital one can be adjusted as hearing gets worse (and sadly it does).

But your best bet is to go see him. Consultation is free, and he doesn't have one of those terrible sales techniques. He really is a genuine guy who helps.

As to e mailing ears, that can't be done, but you could send them by taxi (preferab ly with body attached!)

Go for it - nothing like being part of the human race, and lack of hearing means lack of being part! (well, as far as communication is conc

Good. I hope that 2010 will be a lot clearer for you and that you end up hearing everything that is said, and remember there is a great advantage to owning a hearing aid - you can turn it off when the wife gets too strident. How do I know that? Need you ask?

Hi MarieB

I read this thread when it started & emailed Mr Said's details to my other half. he's deaf in both ears & it's getting steadily worse. His problem started years ago when he was still quite young & subjected to very loud engine noise on a course in the days before Health & Safety. When he was tested in the UK. in late 90s, he only had 60% hearing in each ear. He was given an NHS hearing aid which he found useless. The test hearing aid which they use for the test also gave in excema in both ears which he still has. I have tried to get him to contact Mr Said & was most surprised to see the cost of the digital hearing aid. Is your husband partially deaf in just one ear & how do I persuade mine to go to see him. He cannot watch TV without subtitles & headphones as well now, so all the Dvds have to have English subtitles & they're mostly not available here. He misses so much speech now & will gradually withdraw from life I fear. Why is he so stubborn I wonder?

Message 10 - UK prices ????

I was at Spec Savers yesterday in the UK getting my eyes tested and they were advertising Digital Hearing Aid (one) £245. £425 was for 2 digital hearing aids.

You know what they say about Spec Savers, I think it's a different & slightly rude name.

Petz. Please get you hearing loss sorted! I've popped into the shop in Lefkosia to buy batteries for my aids and found the staff there to be very helpful. Please do remember that like everything else in life there are hearing aids and there are hearing aids and by and large you get what you pay for. The critical thing is to get the one that matches your prescription which will be the outcome of your test. Digital ones are brilliant and the fitting is key. Each aid has a micro chip which is tuned to your needs via a special computer used by the dispenser Digital aids almost think for you and respond to differing noise situations. My aids are in the ear - vanity I guess! But there has been some excellent advancement in the design and size of behind the ear aids which, may suit you or scruff's husband better. Cost - believe me £400 is cheap so long as the aids work for you. Lots of info on web - try RNID. Please sort it because a good aid will keep your hearing system alert.

I was really interested in this thread due to being profoundly deaf in both ears. I have the latest hearing aids from Uk - digital - which cost over £2,000 each so if I can get comparible aids over here for only £400 when the time comes for some new ones then I will be one happy bunny. Anyone suffering from hearing loss really really should get hearing aids.....after all we are all quick enough to get specs when reading is not so easy. I still have to have subtitles, but I think that my problem is so severe, however good the aids are I will never be back to 'normal' - but I am at least able to interact with people, albeit in fairly limited circumstances. Scruff, please tell your other half to take advantage of what is now available - he will not regret it I am sure.

I have just read your posting 2 him. I live in hope. It's probably more frustrating for me too because he expects me to shout at him. I have to say most things 3 times. It does cause some friction at times. He's much worse than he was 10 yrs ago but has been watching TV with subtitles almost since they became widely available. I know he misses so much of what is said to him by others.

Hi Scruff, well I can promise your other half that a whole new world will open up to him...and he will realise what he has been missing. It is very frustrating for both parties, and a lot of understanding is needed. My hubby has a habit of talking to me with his back to me, or his head in a cupboard......facing me is far better as my limited ability at lip reading helps too. It is very, very difficult to take part in conversations, but I find that if you make people aware of the difficulty then they try to make life easier by speaking more clearly. Good luck anyway and I hope that he will at least give it a try and see what a difference it makes to his life - and to yours. Best wishes.

This is an interesting thread! My hearing has declined over a number of years, to the point where I have 43% hearing loss. I,m OK, I can still here most of what goes on in my life but, I do miss peoples conversations who are "softly spoken" and it annoys my better half when I turn up the volume on the TV. I did have have expensive hearing aids until I lost them (Doh) it was a very different life, but one I never got used too. Cups banging on saucers, spoons banging on tables, traffic noise, lift doors squeeking, hearing my own feet walking on wooden floors!! Now, you might think thats better however, I almost prefer to be partially deaf, apart from the constant and almost unbearable hissing noise in my ears. So, do I go back to hearing aids??? Hmmmmm@!@

Hi Stockiefan. I would def (no pun!) persevere with hearing aids. The ones I have are state of the art and adjustable by my audiologist on computer. They have a number of different settings to deal with different situations, like watching TV/listening to music, in the car, in a bar or restaurant, and everyday noisy situations. I know exactly what you mean about the noise but if you can persevere with that then it should get better over time. I think it can take several months for your brain to get used to what you are hearing - which everyone hears but can block out - we can't. There is a setting on my aids that cuts that noise down too. I know what you mean about the hissing - I have severe tinnitus in both ears, so you may have the same - it's horrible and never stops, but I think the aids help this too as they amplify sounds and that helps mask the tinnitus. I was allowed to try mine out for a week before deciding to buy - its a lot of money to part with - but worth it.

To Scruff. My hubby is deaf in both ears - industrial deafness, but maybe not as bad as your husband. But, any help is better than no help.

How do you persuade him to go - perhaps telling him the test is free! I agree with all that others have said about getting used to digitals, and if it is any help my husband still can't understand American accents and can't follow a movie when the background music is loud jazz, but he can join in conversations previously denied him; he can hear music which he loves; he is dcefinitely better off with the hearing aids than without.

So good luck. Or shall I write to your stubborn husband!

I recently used Said, excellent service, however depending on how deaf you are will depend on how much you pay. I am extemely deaf in both ears and one aid cost me 2500TL, so be prepared before you go, but it does make a great deal of difference to your quality of life and greatly reduces the embarassment of asking people to repeat themselves. In the ear aids are not that noticeable. If you need a hearing aid GET ONE.
