Does anyone know how I can get in touch with anyone at Theatre Lambousa? They recently performed one of my plays, 'White Lies', as part of an evening of one act plays. Unfortunately, they did so without purchasing a performing rights licence and my publishers may be considering legal action. If anyone from Theatre Lambousa reads this, could they contact my publishers at http://www.lazybeescripts.co.uk? Many thanks!

Yes,all for charity,Richie you must realise what TRNC is.No legal law. Please write another, free of charge, and donate to Theatre Lambousa. I was an actor in one of the other plays,,I rehearsed for weeks, but did not expect any remuneration. Your play was not very good anyway. Go back to UK,and get on the West End,then...................

It's not Peter Shaffer is it, author of "White Lies", I've been a fan of yours for years especially film of adaptions such as Amadeus. At 83 years old, and considering the time it would take to go to court in north Cyprus, I would have thought you were being a bit hopeful of seeing any compensation. I see you're lying about your age as well - 40!

Oops, sorry, wrong "White Lies", Richard. Considering how little you charge, £19 for a single performance , it surely can't be worth taking action. If you really are based in Lapta, why not pop in to the theatre and ask to be paid in free drinks - 3 should cover it

Interesting thread! If an e mail address was given someone could write direct and then , Richie Rich, no one owuld know who snitched! But if you know anything about North Cyprus you would know who was who, or look it up on the web, or make enquiries through friends. But, don't forget, as has been pointed out - we don't exist here. There are no copyright laws, no plagiarism (although enough peoplde practice it), in fact many of us rejoice in good old fashioned freedom of not worrying if we are breaking a law , but just get on with doing good things which give great fun to many. Also, as one involved in Am Drams, I know what a relief it is when living with 'poor people' not to have to fork out huge sums of money for givingt the public some entertain ment. Now if someone could give me a good free panto script......................................

In the rest of the civilized, Western European world, it is the custom to request the rights to a writer's intellectual property, even for a charity event. You never know, the rights may well be given gratis. Doing otherwise is theft. And theft is still regarded poorly in Europe, from what I remember. If someone took £60 from your pocket, you wouldn't shrug. And if someone came along and stole your house...

YOu said it - 'the rest of the civilised, Western European world'. Just remember that none of these laws existed decades ago, and North Cyprus is decades behind the 'civilised Western world' , so although one has to agree in prnciple, the reality is that, in that famous three worded statement 'This is Cyprus'. As to stealing houses, of course that is very much a current discussion, isn't it? And through this we are all discovering that the word 'theft' means different things to different people. And just for the record, I had a restaurant in Western Australia 'steal' my writing and didn't pay me a dollar - not even a free cup of coffee, (he put my newspaper report on his web page)and I regard Australia as one of the most civilised places in the world, but then the restaurant owner was a Turkish Cypriot! He obviously takes his own traditions with him and that he is merely sharing the results of my 'intellectual property'

I think if someone creates something a book, or a play, or a car or a song or whatever and someone else uses it for their own benefit... then the person who has created it deserves to be re-imbursed for their efforts. There is a moral responsibility regardless of where you live. Look at it another way, if you had a cafe and someone ordered a coffee would you expect them to pay for it? Having said that this was for charity and I think someone is just stirring up trouble for the sake of it.

Right; Firstly, out of common courtesy you should have been asked whether the performance could go ahead as a charitable production and believe you would have waived any royalties due. Secondly, your play is an actors nightmare (read it on your link), no wonder there was so much prompting, as you say in your blog. Thirdly, why on earth do writers not write plays from an actors point of view, for actors, hence my comment about Eugene O'Neil. Read 'The Clandestine Marriage', a play written by actors for actors. Richard, put this one to bed, and I hope you get an email of apology as an oversight on this particular occasion from those that where involved in the production. Richard

This whole thread has give me a great idea for a play! Its got lies, intrigue, international espionage and a gang of outlaws... sort of like Being John Malkovich meets Young Guns... what do you think? scene 1, It is a cold winter evening, our hero Dick Branston is huddled over his typewriter, next to him on the floor mountains of discarded paper, he lights a cigarette inhales deeply and pronounces to his loving wife.. "I've finished it darling..." Cut to the harbour at Kyrenia, inside a bustling harbour restaurant... shots of kebabs and efes, a middle aged man rushes in to the cafe grasping a pile of noteppaper... "I found it" he says to the group .. "this is the one I have been looking for!"... what do you think?

Like the idea of the play with the lead Mr Branston. I assume that as the play unfolds he is given a way out of the pickle in which he finds himself!!!!???? And aren't there any women in this drama? Choose me! What about my playing the 'loving wife' although I don't think I could cope with the full ashtrays and papers on the floor unless Mr 'Pickle' wanted to tidy up himself. Or would he accept a Christmas gift of nic\otine patches. Perhaps you could e mail a copy of the script when it is written and then it could be put on the board for everyone to download and you could be world wide famous as a writer, but of course, penniless due to lack of funds paid for the use of aforementioned script. Isn't it fun being in Cyprus where just about anything goes (apart form tearing up speeding fine tickets!)

lol.... can we use that joke Maie? Unfortunately we have already cast the loving wife.. Kate Winslet wants to do it, she loves the part and is taking a big pay cut too.. We've got her for a case of Efes and an all day breakfast at JK's. The play is done in a post modern style Marie, so you can play yourself.. infact you have just written your first lines already!

Well, I always claim to be a 'Recycled Teenager'; but not sure I believe in enough miracles to become a 'Recycled Virgin!' and I just can't tell lies! Yes, you can use the joke Petez, and perhaps we could write the rest of this tear-jerking saga together. As to Post Modern - no prob. In fact I am so modern that I am Post-post-modern, and playing myself is easy, as I am a Heinz 57 with latent undiscovered talents that could all come to the surface taking part in this Cypriot block buster. Hollywood here I come, but not until I have converted the hero into being a non-smoker. In the meantime refuse all offers from other mega-stars. Sophia can stay in Italy, our Joan in U.K with her oh-so-young husband, and Penelope Cruz can go chase her Tom-cat. I';m all yours - for a huge, fat, bank boggling fee!

Scene 2 The thief who had stolen Dick Branstons manuscript waved it in great excitement up into the smoked filled air of the bar, ordered a bottle of Raki, sat on an old well worn bench and proceeded to read the script thoroughly. "My god" he screamed, " the bloody thing is in code!" He pondered whether a Dick could be a Richard and 'Branston' was a 'T' too much. Music started, becoming louder and louder but was coming from outside the bar. Everyone exited to see where the source of the music originated from and saw a 70ft narrow boat navigating its way into the old harbour, painted in red with 'virgin' sprayed along its sides. An old Cypriot, two bottles of Raki the wiser cried,"It's from across the 'Atlantic' to save us". The thief then knew he was onto something big, very big and very, very rich and wealthy, but what was the meaning of the coded manuscript he held and what was Dick (Richard) Branston (Branson) really worth and was he worth it and to whom? Richard

Ah, reminds me of an old radio show (back in the days of crystal sets, methinks) when the host would cry 'Give 'em the money Barney.' Can;t remember the name of the bod - a man from Yorkshire I believe. And why should I be reminded of that, cos I would be delighted to meet Mr Branston without a T, who is not a proper Charlie but a real Dick, and for someone to yell in his shell-like 'Give 'er the money, Branny' and then I could sail away to Australia and live happily ever after! Could that be Scene 3, please!

People of TRNC: I'm sorry life in your mediterranean paradise had been sullied by, it seems to me, an entirely reasonable request for acknowledgement of work done. You may not like the work (why choose it then?) but that's how this guy makes his living. The fact that your play was for charity doesn't make his request any less reasonable - he has already said you would have got the play for free if you had simply asked. Your massed decision to go in the offensive is disproportionate and unfair. Here's a thought - why not apologise?

Heyay ... can I remind you chatterers that KADS has paid Lazy Bee its cash for the scenario for 'Who Sleighed Santa?' [to be performed as a fundraiser for KAR at The Mountain View Hotel at 7.30pm on Saturday 12 December - reservations at 25 TL from KAR Office, The Mountain View Hotel and Cine Miles in Girne] ... so at least one group in the TRNC is playing ball with the UK writers. They write their plays expecting a return for their talents and skills ... who are we to deny them that? The Embargoes should not, I feel, work in reverse. Remember that 'alerts' set to scour the net let UK people know what we are up to here by checking our websites. How else did the writer of 'White Lies' know about Forum 44?

Re message 40 Hi Emtee01 you say ...."Your massed decision to go in the offensive is disproportionate and unfair." You are the making an incorrect mass assumption about this forum and the people living in Cyprus. Considering the forum has many thousands of members your post is 'unfair' to the vast majority who didnt go on the offensive or agreed with you. Please do not tar everyone with the same brush, that is as equally as ignorant.
