We have gas central heating, but the bottom of the radiators upstairs do not get hot, have bleed them no air in the radiators. If we switch off radiators downstairs the one's upstairs will get hot. Anyone know what we can do or know of a good central heating engineer.

pinxi

do you mean trv

the problem described could be one of many things ,the system may need powerflushing ,

your pump could be positioned in the wrong place hence creating air which rises.

however it could also be as simple as water pressure ,not having enough water in the system

so before you do anything check the pressure bar and fill to at least 1,5 bars.

Air does not seem to be the problem here. Balancing, as suggested is the first thing to try. If you have disturbed the balancing start by closing the lockshield side of the radiators that are first on the run. This should then push more water through to the other radiators. You may have adjustment left on the pump if it has more than one speed you can turn it up. Is the boiler working effieciently? Does it need a service? Remember that if the boiler is too small on BTU for the size of house then in very cold conditions there will not be enough heat to go around.

Check the water pressure if combi but normally boilers have a cut out when the pressure goes too low, not always the case though.

Never heard of a non return valve being fitted upstairs. If a differential pressure relief valve fitted then it may need adjusting. Forget the previous as I think it most unlikley that anyone would fit one in the TRNC!

there could be sludge in the system or the balance btwn upstairs and downstairs could be wrong if its a combi you cant fit a bigger pump as these are integral to the boiler if its a new fault i would suggest a system flush call me 05338384636 and i can talk you through

Majority of pumps tend to be either a 5m or 6m head. You can replace a 5m with 6m as the size is the same but if the system has been working before with a 5m pump then problem is likley to be elsewhere. A system flush may be a good idea if it is believed that corrosion due to lack of inhibitor fluid has occured. An easy way to test for this is when bleeding a radiator light a match next to the bleed hole, if it lights it is hydrogen and corrosion is occuring.
