An Italian court sentenced American student Amanda Knox to 26 years in prison Saturday for murdering her British roommate in a drunken sex game, in a case which has drawn huge interest in Italy and abroad. After an 11-month trial in the Italian university town of Perugia, Knox, 22, was jailed for the murder and sexual assault of British student Meredith Kercher. Knox's Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 25, received a 25-year sentence for his part in the November 2007 killing. guido

I saw that on the news, but if they are in prison how will they ever pay the compensation?

A very strange case - evidence seems very circumstantial and motives still unclear. I am not saying they are not gulity, but I don't think the truth came out completely. Rudy Guede got 30 years but is appealling.

It was a horrible murder. Since when did one have to have motives for a drug-fuelled attack? Probably the truth did not all come out, as they both lied constantly. I think the jury have seen all the evidence for a year, and there was dna on the murder weapon.

They certainly do, but I think the appeals may be interesting: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8396716.stm Knox already has a vociferous lobby in her own state. DNA on a kitchen knife handle is to be expected. I think there will be plenty on mine. The victim's DNA sample was so small it was destroyed in testing. I am not saying that they are not guilty. The jury has heard evidence for a year, but mistakes have been made in the past.

I doubt whether she ever handled that knife in the kitchen, given her known life style. Why fake a break in - window was obviously (to the police) broken from the inside and why ruin a perfectly innocent man? Her father would have a lobby, he is rich, but well done Italian justice and I hope they don't release them early.

Meredith's family are certainly relieved. A lovely, hard-working, decent girl. But they are right, remember her for the good times, so hard for them.
