Well, Winters here and it's time to find some indoor pursuits, ok ok no ribald comments please! The old boy's busy with his drum kit, so I have decided to see if I still have any knitting skills left. Can anybody out there recommend a shop preferably in the North, with a good stock of wool and possibly patterns in English? Failing that one in South / Nicosia would do at a pinch. I have downloaded some from the web but it's nice to mooch through them by hand. Best Regards Diana

Also good shop if you come down the High Street in Girne and turn left at the crossroads just past the shop that sells suitcases you will see a set of steps going up to a row of shops. About the third shop up is the wool shop, very reasonable. I have never been able to find English patterns anywhere here though! I have a few with me so if you let me know what you are looking for I can lend you some. Chris

HI Chris, thank you, will visit this one too. Went on the web last night and downloaded a few patters that were listed as "free". Surprisingly very successful for a first attempt of mine! I think I have found what I needed, "Shrugs" in particular, but will let you know if I get more adventurous lol Best regards Diana

brightlights - the only thing I ever knitted was a kettle holder (remember them from school) and a very long scarf - all in plain knit and someone had to cast off for me - so I am full of admiration for anyone that knit a "shrug"!

Also, if you ever find yourself in Lefkosa where all the market type shops are (near the Buyuk Hann) there are a couple of wool shops with floor to ceiling balls of wool - it's an amazing place, the owner used to buy all his wool from my home town in Yorkshire and his knitting needles are British (better quality than Turkish) also in the same area is a haberdashery which sells everything you could possibly want. I could spend hours there mooching around. He does say that English knitting patterns are very hard to come by here. Regards Michele

I love knitting but as the grandchildren have grown up they don't want any knitted clothes these days except hats and gloves which are boring to knit. I have taught the 3 girls how to knit and sew and from time to time they have a go. So my knitting time is spent on the PC.

Michele, I loved that shop and the lovely old man that was in there. Unfortunateley when we went back there this summer we were told he had died. His son apparently sometimes opens the shop but not really sure if he is keeping it on. Sad as he was a lovely character. Sheila

Diana The wool shops in lefkosa are excellent. Have never bought any patterns here but have bought lots of wool. I have 2 ring binders full of patterns if you would like to borrow any. Have a lovely pattern for a shrug - have just knitted 2 for the bridesmaids at my son's wedding. We are in Ozankoy. Mary (not Vince!)

Hi all, thank you very much for your replies, have noted them all. I used to knit regularly, did not bring anything out with me, and now have the urge again. What set me off was a lovely knitted wool "open waistcoat" that I saw in Debenhams in the south for 77E, and I thought I can do that, hopefully for a lot less money lol. With weather like today, having tired of scrabble on line, knitting could be the best thing for me, and useful too as there are lots of very smart items that could be made and worn, rather than knitting for the children, which with me being a grandparent, are all grown up! Mary, thank you, when I get my hand back in with the pattern I have found I may well take you up on your kind offer to look through your patterns as they seem to be hard to come by out here. Kind Regards Diana

Sheila, I am sad to hear about the man from the wool shop in Lefkosa. I used to love going there and he used to tell me about his wools from England. He also had Robin knitting patterns from the 50's in there - if anyone can remember the 50's!!

CJtill. I too have lots of patterns some from late 40's onwards costing 3d & 6d when my Mother in law died I couldn't throw her patterns away, some of them my husband remembers her knitting for him and romper suits & jumpers and skirts she knit for our children, I loved the fair isle waistcoats & tea cosy's knitted with the remnants of ball's of wool, if she knit a jumper or cardigan it always had a line of colour in it.

We were in the shop last week and his son is now running it and is just finding his feet. He was very very helpful ,he also told us about a super coffee shop just along from him. He is well worth a visit. Liz |

Thanks JohnW, I have worked through about 25 web pages so far from an Altavista search of patterns, quite amazing how many free ones there are, and thousands more when one gets into the pay-to-download category.I have narrowed this to about 3 that I think would suit me, now for a trip to the wool shop, may just be time to get it done to wear for Christmas dinner! - Will post a pic when it gets finished.... Thanks one and all for your interest and contributions, I guess we have a lot of knitting fans out there, or else rainy-weekend boredom has really set in lol Diana

Woodspeckie, I have got all my mother's knitting patterns too. Mostly from the 40's. There are some terrific styles but unfortunately I can only crochet and not knit.

| Not quite sure about this because wifey is out at work at the moment. Turkish knitting needle numbers are different to UK needle numbers so if you are wanting to knit to a UK pattern then make sure you have UK knitting needles and when wifey is in and has got her 'feet under the desk' I will ask her about the discrepancy between UK and Turkish knitting needle numbers.
