I am totally addicted! and have been since I was tiny! just watching it spread on my toast makes me go weak at the knees. I take it on holiday and even took it on my honeymoon! even if it wasn't good for me (vitB) I would still eat it! My son got a limited edition Marmite with Champagne!!!!!! for when I was last in the UK "heaven" mmmm x

Love it. Like you have been eating marmite every day since a toddler (long time) However, I do get bitten but maybe not quite so badly as I would without the marmite.

Love it - add it to stews and mince as well as on toast with cheddar melted on top.

I remember tasting Vegemite - I believe; the Australian version - it was like eating melted candles - revolting.......

"Marmite, do you love it or hate it".

1: This fascinating question, so strongly related to (Northern) Cyprus, has been thoroughly discussed on bulletin boards 5, 4, 3 and 2 years ago. 2 : I find it hard to believe that someone bothered to start up the computer to write this question! Just my opinion of course...

Kiwis prefer their own brand - 'Vegemite'!

Available @ New Zealand House in the Haymarket - taste the difference, then bin yer 'Marmite'!

The final words in this thread (I don't think so): I love tulip bulbs, which I had to eat when I was two years of age (1945). Do you love 'em or hate 'em?

RE msg 23: (...) Hans - never tried them. I have read many books about WW2 with this fact - I'm assuming it's correct then? (...)

=> It is, Jeannie. During the last weeks of the Second World War the western part of my native country was starving (after the disastrous error the Allied Command, Eisenhower, made: listening to Field Marshall Montgomery, who hadn't done his home work. Result: thousands of British, American, Polish and Dutch casualties around Arnhem and elsewhere). Thousands of dead people in the streets of all cities in Holland. No coffins anymore. Etc. The last possibility: eat what could be eaten (and get sick after a couple of days). And then the Allied bombers came to Holland, after the surrender of the Germans, to bomb the country with Swedish white bread. My parents never stopped talking about the Canadian forces liberating Amsterdam.

Love, love love it. Also was diagnosed as having a B12 deficiency so now have a perfect excuse to have it every day, for medicinal purposes. Husband can't stand the stuff - opposites attract, so they say.

DC it must have been awful to be so hungry that eating flower bulbs was the only option. Thankfully you have survived to tell the tale.

Its Ok but Vegemite is much better and massively outsells it in Australia where you can get both in most supermarkets etc.

RE msg 37, baldeagle: NEVER EVER mention the word Rotterdam to someone from Amsterdam (a first basic lesson for immigrants in Holland)...

P.S. Indeed I was born in Amsterdam.

P.P.S. You have a very good taste for top-sweets - your only problem is that a tin with Haagsche Hopjes is standing next to my computer right now.

Baldeagle: If you visit the Lambousa market (Lapta) this Saturday you can collect a couple of Haagsche Hopjes at our stall (Medieval Cyprus Fellowship). Ask my wife Trix for them. And bring your passport to ID yourself, because I don't trust the British on this board...

Marmite, vegemite, twiglets, olives, stilton, Haagsche Hopjes .... now it's Christmas!!! Add a teaspoon of marmite to the meat juices and you have the most fabulous gravy or 'jus' in seconds! ... go on, be daring, you know you just have to try it!

=> Ha! I'm sorry to hear that you found them also! We've bought some already and enjoyed them. They are not as good as the Dutch variety but they are not bad, considering the fact that the maker, Lidl, is Germany based...

Love Marmite especially on hot, buttered toast. But disagree with Carolynne (msg 34) about the squeezy bottle. Bought one once and it was a complete disaster. The bottle gets all distorted and after a while you have to wrestle the marmite out with a knife. A lovely big glass jar is much much better

Glad to hear that Hans admits Holland was liberated by other Nations, in his case the Canadians. Will the Dutch ever be able to defend it's own borders without relying on other Countries to prop up it's terrority? I suppose Indonesia was easy pickings for them!
