Just been In Astro in Kyrenia, freezers are almost empty, little clumps here and there on some shelves, only 1 choice of tinned corn beef @ 5.75, has anyone else noticed this, wonder if they are next to close.

I have been asking for weeks if they are closing down, as they seem to have one of everything on a shelf, except washing powder, but once they are out of something they dont re-order it, so I dont think it will be long before that closes down

Why do you think it will be closing down?

Because of the shelves being so empty and if I ask for anything which they normally stock they say we dont stock it any more sold out. I hope for all the staff that it stays open

Sheila I think it is because it is the scruffiest of all the supermakets and the staff always seem disinterested, and it may be just me but I always think it smells bad in there.

I understand what you are saying Sheila, but are they running out of money? Are they too expensive? Perhaps they are running the stock down to do a refit.

I always thought they were quite reasonable on prices.

Maybe the shop is too large, if the goods were compacted into a smaller area then maybe it would like more pleasing on the eye. I think their prices are reasonable, no dearer than the others.

Does anyone else think the layout of the store is oddly shaped. I get disorientated in there sometimes lol

Mindy I have only been in there twice and yes it is oddly worked out, but it is the smell that disturbs me, it's horrible.

They must have lost a fortune with the Alsancak store. It never took off and they held on for too long obviously losing more and more money every day. They also closed a store in Lefkosa at the same time as Alsancak so it looks like the writing is on the wall.

The same happened with Serko - they had a good little store at Lapta and then opened one in Alsancak which took most of the customers from Lapta. Lapta eventually closed but Alsancak wasn't far behind because the failing Lapta leached all the cashflow. Starling took over the Alsancak store and Fresco the Lapta one. Fresco eventually closed and now it is another Starling and doing well.

I think good fresh veg is the key. All the supermarkets sell basically the same lines and the only thing to choose between them is the meat and veg. Astro and Fresco never had good veg, but Starlings started as a veg stall and expanded into a supermarket and all their stores seem to be doing well.

The only good thing about Lemar is that their vegetables always look healthy, sadly Supreme's do not.

I have no respect for Lemar or Astro because I do know that they default on payments to small people who supply them vegetables.

Do these companies do any market research based on a little thing called numbers and supply outweighing demand?or do they just say lets open another supermarket! Find a need and fill it,its not rocket science is it really, these failed ventures must lose these companies small fortunes.

Usually the failed companies simply pack up and disappear and let the small creditors pick up the unpaid bills. The police are hardly ever interested in fraudulent bankruptcies. The poor creditor goes to court and takes a judgement against the firm and then he has the option of framing the judgement and hanging it on the wall as a reminder not to give too much credit to anybody.
