IMPORTANT, when burning wood in an enclosed space you need ventilation

As the fire draws air from inside, any fire over 5KW needs an air block to pass

Regulations ( UK ), so if your new fire is giving you a headache you may need to

Open a window.

Corbo & Jock1 , I posted this after one of your threads .

I have just got a wood burning stove, the brown round sort, and lit it for the first time yesterday. I couldn't believe the heat it thew off, but unfortunately have a sinus headache today, so hope it wasn't the stove. I have got last years wood that I bought about 3 months ago, and it burns easily. I didn't know about the ash, so cleaned it all out this morning and laid it for tonight. I'll try leaving the ash in then for a few days. Stella

is an air block similar to the gap under my door and in my windows, where fresh air gets to replace the air dragged into the stove. I think these gaps have to be put in as part of the new Cypriot Draught Regulations

mugged, its the first 7 kw is free air then after that you need ventilation for this.unless theyve changed regs in the last 3 years which is likely,

corbo ,uk regs on flues and ventilation saves lives.

malcansak, natural draughts count for the first 7kw then an air brick usually 100cm2 is fitted.

if your getting a headache when using your fire and its over 7kw you need a FIXED airbrick,an open window wont do.also get the updraught of the flue on your fire checked by a competant heating engineer.

I'm sure the regulations do save lives and many are probably right but they can go too far at times.

We are interested in buying a wood burning stove for when we move to Northern Cyprus in August 2010. We are currently living in mainland Rurkey and there are lots of the small round brown wood burners for sale here at about 150TL. As the wood burner we want to buy will be set INTO our fireplace rather than be free-standing - can you tell me if this kind of wood burner would be suitable, safe and not lose any of it's heat?

Also we have been looking at comments on the forum about gas heating. Basically we are interested in findng out how much a gas fire would cost a) to buy and b) to run for a winter in Cyprus and compare this to the cost of wood.

Hope you can help

Irene and Alan

The good thing about the round log burning stoves are that as they are not fitted, the long chimney is inside the house and you get all the heat from it, whereas the ones that are built into the house lose a lot of heat up the chimney.
