Is it possible to buy a vehicle on behalf of someone else ie. say as an agent. My friend has put a holding deposit on a car but as the seller leaves Cyprus before friend comes back here can I do the neccessary admin for him. I have copies of his passport and I am aware I need to see Muktah and seller and buyer fill in form for transfer so my questions are: 1. Is it possible to act as agent for buyer. 2. Is it the same form for buyer and seller which needs to be filled in. 3. Do I get forms from Police Station or Tax office 4. Do both seller and buyer or in this case agent take forms to Muktah to check etc. 5. Can it all be processed here in Girne or do we go to Lefkosia and if so where?? Thankyou for any help, would be appreciated.

You will need the purchaser to give you power of attorney to buy on his/her behalf, a Muhtar letter is only required if the vendor and purchaser do not go to the "DVLA" office together. No forms required other than the transfer form that both purchaser and vendor fill out at the Lefkosa office, you can go to the police with the vendor to check that there are no penalties (speeding) e.t.c pending.

Aslan Thankyou for your reply, you have been most helpful. Problem now is vendor leaves Cyprus on 19th December and purchaser doesn't arrive until 2nd January. Will there be complications if the purchaser does all the paperwork then when he arrives. I can get a letter from vendor signed saying he has sold it and been paid in full etc

A friend of ours bought a 4x4 last year and because the registered owner of the vehicle was not here in the TRNC they had to wait until his return before the deal was legally sealed some three months later. So if the owner is definatley not coming back maybe think again. But there again things change.

BB Thanks for your advice,,,,,,,, The registered owner is here, it is the purchaser that won't be here until 2 weeks after the seller leaves the Island. I thought if I had a signed letter from buyer allowing me to act on his behalf this would suffice, I have copy of his passport and contract for his villa, he is not a full time res, a swallow who just wants a car to drive when here.

I believe the simplest solution is for you to buy the car on their behalf then "sell" on when they move over, this will incurr two transfer charges which are payable by the purchaser but you should negitiate one of these with the vendor

Am I right in thinking that if you are not a full time resident with residency permit you cant get a TC driving Licence and if you havent got a TC driving licence you cant have insurance. Being a "Swallow" as you call him will he be lagally allowed to drive ??? Isnt the TRNC wonderfull LOL

Bat girl I did think about buying car then transferring later, seems a good option. Thanks for your help. BB God isn't it complicated, it's a catch 22 then. Unless we do the above. My hubby could be the registered keeper and Purchaser a named driver. Maybe 1 way round it.

One way round it and I think quite legal ,allowed to drive on your UK licence for up to 90 days per year. Dont no if anyone keeps tabs on how long you do in a year ??? Believe me UK is just as bad when it comes to red tape as I found out when returning to the UK earlier this year to become a swallow.

Smithy thanks We are not selling, our friend has put deposit on car to secure it Do you think a letter from Notary would suffice if we buy on friends behalf.

As far as I am aware, you are able to drive on British Driving Licence for 3 months before having to get a TRNC licence, which coincides with residency permit anyway. I dont live in TRNC, own a car there as well as a villa & have fully comprehensive car insurance.

In addition, make sure that the documentation for the vehicle matches the vehicle. ie engine number, chassis number vpin number. If you find out later that one is incorrect you will have mega problems costing money. Also check with police that there are no outstanding fines for the vehicle. Once transfered if there are speeding tickets or worse you are potentially liable.
