A wine is my main tipple, (mainly white) I have enjoyed Cankara and Villa Doluca, (spellings may differ) cannot help with red as I have not really tried it.

Hello,

Red Yakut (kavakilidere) is quite nice, but can be a bit variable.Red "Chateau St. Hilarion" is very good, but it is seriously overpriced in the couple of supermarkets that offer it. There's an off licence out by Catalkoy, off the Girne-Esenteppe road, on the left which used to sell it at a readonable price , however I haven't been there recently

Ian02,

What luck The Ship on Wednesday. Have an Efes for me.!

Give my regards to Zube. Tell him John sends his best, and he wants his money back.

You can get Cankaya at the Ship!

Kup both red and white are reasonable everyday drinking and are produced using organic methods available in bottles 2 litre bottles and casks averages around 5-5.5 YTL per litre.

Personally I don't find any of the Turkish wines to be anything particularly special and of the local North Cyprus stuff avoid Aphrodite.

If you like Brandy Cyprus spirit and Anglias are good both from the south but available in most supermarkets in the north Anglias is generally cheaper but Cyprus spirit is in my view a little better.

I'll have to check the Gin prices as I havent bought any.

It probably depends on what brand as with Scotch where some reasonable brands 'such as Famous Grouse etc are a lot cheaper than others.

One tip several Cypriots have told me to avoid the TRNC spirits Vodka, Gin Raki etc which are only about 5-7 YLT per bottle as they are apparently they are some form of flavoured alcohol rather than the genuine thing and not good for you if you drink a lot.

I checked the Gin rice at my local store a 750 ml bottle of Gordons is 18YTL you may get it a bit cheaper at a larger supermarket and find more brands.
