Of course we all know that Basmati is the best the world over but does anyone know why is it so much more expensive that the other imported varieties out here? I bought a bag from one of the supermarkets marked for £2.99 and they sold it at 17TL. I bought a 500g bag the other day which cost me 9.60TL.!!!

Hi Pippie,

That is expensive but I can tell you where I got a "bargain" compared to that deal

I got a 5KG / 11lbs of basmati rice frol Illelli (Make is "Chef Nassim") for about 23 ytl & it cooks very well for basmati as it's not to sticky. I use it in about 1kg batches to make Indialn pilau rice & get about 5 portions out of 1 KG.

Ilelli ( not sure of spelling) is very near Alsancak Starling.

The Girne paddy fields were over irrigated in October leading to a catastrophic failure in this years crop!

Ha, ha, very funny.

Seriously though, I looked at my receipt and whereas most other food items have 16% VAT included in the price, the basmati rice only had 1% so I can't understand why it's so expensive.

Even if there was, it doesn't explain why basmati is so expensive compared to others, eg, Baldo, Luks which you can get for 1/3 or 1/2 the price.
