A couple of years ago on the road down to the Mare Monte there used to be a couple of rather large white helicopters in a field on the right hand side. Anybody know who they belonged too (UN maybe) or where they went?

They have been gone for some time now. Not sure who they belonged to but not UN, as far as I know.

If I remember well: they were Russian heli's and part of a plan to organise flights for tourists. The Turkish Army didn't find that a good idea.

In 1995/6 a "Naturists" holiday village was constructed just outside Yeni Erenkoy in the Karpaz. The Beach was bulldozed, so no more turtles could lay their eggs there and pre-fabricated wooden huts were erected to house the future tourists. The helicopters were to be used to ferry the incoming and outgoing tourists from Ercan to the holiday resort. For one reason or another it didn't happen and the helicopters were then used to provide helicopter tours of North Cyprus for £50 per head. That didn't really take off either and for many many years they sat in a field next to Mare Monte hotel, slowly disintegrating. They were white Sikorsky helicopters and used to be started up periodically, I suppose to keep their engines in order.

Hi,

I remember posting this image: - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3352/3209212648_7c3ac22532_o.jpg

which shows said helicopters, in response to an aviation enthusiast's query - the image is dated Jan 2009, but I can't remember any more than that...

For those of you who do not know. Martin's information will usually be as spot on as you might find.
