There is only one way to get it that low;

Pull out the main fuse, use no electricity and just pay your standing charge............

When you say "reach a 50tl monthly electricity bill" do you mean that 50tl will be the MAXIMUM you will pay no matter how much you use?

There are ways to cut your electricity bill without cutting your energy consumption but they cost more to set up than the savings they make, e.g. use more gas and change to gas appliances, use solar and wind power or even do what some locals do, plug into your neighbour's supply without them knowing

Hi there.

I am an electrical engineer and may throw some light on this. ( no pun intended). The three main items that bump up electricy bills are as follows.

1. Immersion heater. These are typically 3kw. in simple terms for every hour (or part of) that the immersion is on the cost will be 3 (units) X 35 Kuros. So 1 hour a day per month = 30 ytl. So you could cut that down by half if you shower less! so lets say 15ytl.

2. Fridgefreezer. When running will use approx 1kw so will be around 30 ytl per month.

3. Pool pump. The biggest consumer of all. The average pump for a 9x4 metre pool will be .75kw. Run for 2 hours a day at the momment will be 20ytl a month.

Add on Lighting,TV and washing machine you are looking at another 30ytl a month.

Even with careful management this will total 95ytl a month. In spring/summer the pool pump will need at least 4 hours a day.

I would interested in acheiving the impossible.

many thanks , Simbas

On the subject of Lekky consumption:-

Is it cheaper to leave the immersion heater on all the time just clicking on and off topping up the already hot water in short bursts or to have it work flat out for however long to heat a full tank of cold water?

Chegwin. No it is not. The hot tanks here are not as well insulated as in the UK. & given that they are outside (mostly) leaving the immersion on all the time would result in much larger bils. I doubt if even in the UK. that strategy would work. Remember that in the UK, most people are heating their water through CH & usually gas. In the winter the boiler is on nearly all day.

Back in 2002/3 when electricity bills here were much lower (cheaper per unit than UK) a neighbour tried a month with leaving her immersion on 24/7. The bill, when it arrived the following month, was horrendous.

Unless of course you are on Builders Electric. Mine is roughly 450 TL a month at the moment. I do not use the dishwasher, washing machine everyday or even the oven!! Pool is on 2 hours a day. Heating I have cut back to 2-3 hours a night.

What form of heating Mrs Snakes? I ask because we are on builders and our costs are around 300TL a month with similar usage that you have described.

MrsSnakes

I may be missing something here but if you are on gas (Central I presume) heating then then why cut back at the risk of your health?

I doubt the gas tank and boiler will run up a huge electricity bill.

Just a thought.

Hi Chegwin, because the pump comes on to circulate the water allbeit a small amount but I do have a log fire and I get Mr Snakes to cuddle me more to keep warm!!! I also try to conserve gas, this is going so quickly. We had a delivery of 350 litres 4 weeks ago and it has all gone.

May seem a bit petty to some.....but I take a meter reading everyday at 10am to keep a check on what units we have used and monitor it.

Heating circulating pump around 100 watts max on hi speed. Thats 10 hours for 30 odd kurus. 2 ytl a week. And that's if the pump runs continuously or is cycled by the boiler pump over run stat. Keep the heating on for what it costs, and ignore uniformed remarks like leave the immersion on all the time.

You are correct. 600-1400 watts as apposed to an 18 inch fan being 100 watts. Not quite the same but that's all we ahve used for 7 years. Mind you, we don't do july and august in NC if we can help it.

If it is sold in north Cyprus, then it is covered by the local consumer laws.

If you have the standard Solar water heaters it pays to keep track of how much sunshine there has been and adjust the time you switch on the immersion heater accordingly. On really sunny days you may not need it at all or just for 15-20 minutes and on in between days 30 mins or so is usually ok. Showering in the early evening as opposed to mornings also saves a lot as you are using it after the maximum solar heating has occurred.

Probably water heating cost would be less if you used a gas booster system or the ultimate would be a wood burner with a water jacket using the surplus heat from the fire.

Yep, Aussies, except showering around 3pm is better as once the sun moves to an angle with the panel, on otherwise cold days, the water temperature drops quite rapidly.

Thanks Aussie, can you explain how a gas booster system works please? We don't want to have central heating unless we really have to - can the booster be fitted without it? If so, any idea how much?

Basically I understand you can fit what is effectively a small gas instant water heater (not part of central heating unit) which uses the water from the existing solar tank and than heats it further to a desired temperature setting if necessary.

I am not a plumber and don't know the cost here, but in Australia gas boosted solar systems are considered the best solar systems you can get for ongoing running costs but cost more to buy. Perhaps you can ask a plumber here for likely costs and installation details
