another loss this time to arsenal at home, thats only three wins in fifteen games for rafa benitez. with debts mounting ( reports say they are £400M over drawn at the bank) and a team full of also rans former player and manager graham souness says they are in melt down.

are liverpool fc the first big team to go under due to the football debt mountain?

I very much doubt a club as big as Liverpool going under if they are 400 million pounds in debt or not

I've been a Liverpool fan all my life, but the football being served up just now is the worst i have ever seen. You see kids on the park on a sunday morning hoofing the ball up the field and hopeing that someone gets on the end of it, you dont expect proffessional players to do the same. I went through the team yesterday and asked myself the questions ' good enough or not good enough ' and i rated Pepe good enough, Johnson good enough, Skirtle good enough, Agger good enough, Masher good enough, Gerrard good enough, Benny good enough and Torres good enough, the rest were only average, so we need a lot of good players to be able to compete with the best. I will allways be a Liverpool fan but unless things change very soon, i think i have some dark days ahead.

Strange statement that Rafa came out with last week when he said that his priority was not to win trophy's but to reduce the clubs debt, only know two ways of reducing debt and that is either to be successful [ win trophy's] and get all the money that goes with it...or sell your main assets ie.. the best players. Think Souness has got it about right. taxi for Rafe me thinks...step forward Martin O neil.

Liverpool cannot afford to let Rafa go - it will cost them a pretty packet as he has a water tight 5 year deal! Given Liverpool's finances they'd have to sell a player to pay Rafa off - and given there are only a handful of 'valuable' players in the first place - makes the prospect quite bleak!

In any case which manager in his or maybe even her right mind would take the job when there is at best an average team and no money?

Liverpool may finish 5th or 6th this season and that again puts a lid on a suitable manager wanting to manage a team that isn't in the Champions League!

Liverpool's football history - it would seem is just overrated nostalgia ?

liverpool are up s--t creek and the fans know it , just heard on radio that manager benitez as spent more in five years than sir alex at man utd !

you dont have to be a rocket scientist to see bad buys equal bad team and a bad team means poor finance

Do you think Souness might be looking for a job as manager of Liverpool?

Liverpool 400million in debt. Man utd 900 million in debt and still rising. Two great clubs weighted down with unfortunate debts. Whats the answer ? How many more football clubs will find themselves in this position.

man utds loans under the glazers are 690 million ( approx) the diference with liverpool is man utd can easily afford the repayments due to their huge income streams . united had the forsight to build the biggest stadium in the country from the millions that came into the club when they floated on the london exchange some twenty years ago.

liverpool are stuck with an old stadium with no money to build a new one.

times are bad for them and i think they are going to get far worse

In 2005, the Glaziers borrowed approximately £540m to purchase the club, and that attracts interest of £42m per year. As part of that deal, the Glaziers also borrowed an additional (also approximate) £120m based on future earnings of the club, and that attracts additional interest of £20m per year. So in total, Manchester Utd have debts of about £660m (well over half a billion), and are paying annual interest of around £62m per year. Since the takeover, that debt is reported to have since increased overall.

In the space of a couple of years, Manchester Utd have gone from being a high-spending debt-free club, to a high-spending debt-laden club.

The question is why.

Why did a club with the undeniable pedigree of Manchester Utd, allow themselves to be made the subject of a takeover when they had a good squad, have a proven manager, fantastic worldwide support, and no debt. louie
