hi guys a poll was conducted over the weekend in the volkan newspaper and published also in the famagusta gazette, over half the voters were in favour of a independant state 50.4%, 4.6% of the people say they are in favor of a federal state, 20.1% describe the unimplemented Annan plan as the best option, and only 6.6% are in favor of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation this shows you that hardly any of the north cypriots want a bi zonal federation and over half of the vote want it to be independant, it will intresting to see how many people actually took part in this opinion poll and at the end of the day its what the people want they are the ones that matter not the e.u, u.n, u.k, u.s or any other politcian in other news the old president papadopoulos has critised the new president saying that ''This is a bad, very unpleasant development, and it represents a step back for the greek cypriot side he also complained that the greek cypriot side, for the first time agreed to discuss military confidence-building measures with the turkish cypriot authorities, reversing a long-held position that security issues must be discussed with turkey, which maintains more than 30,000 troops in Turkish Cyprus, he also said that christofias decision to allow discussion of military confidence-building measures with the turkish cypriot officials was a concession. He also criticized christofias' position endorsing a "partnership" of the turkish and greek cypriots and said such terms imply existence of two governments or states, not one federated state Responding to papadopoulos criticism, christofias said a partnership has existed for decades, adding that the long-held reluctance on the part of many greek cypriot politicians to acknowledge this harms the interests of the country looks like the new president is gathering enimies within his own camp and people because most of the politcians still think like papadopoulos and have close ties to him this will interesting to see what happens if they cant agree among themselves how the hell are they going to agree things with the turkish cypriots intresting times ahead!!!!!! regards ukturk

Hard to say whether Christofias is developing backbone or has been pushed in this direction by outside forces. The Volkan survey is all down to how broad the sample was and exactly how the questions were phrased. This has been a crucial factor when punters are asked for their views on Scottish independence. Also, Volkan readers are hardly known for their progressive views nor loyalty to Cyprus before Turkey. ES

Won't go into huge detail now, busy in garden and popped in for 5 mins, but, look around the world at small, independent, low popupation areas/states/countries. Bahamas, Bermuda, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, some others but like said, not going into detail. All have no mineral wealth, and concentrate on offshore banking, offshore company formation/operation, tax efficient money deposits for the extremely wealthy etc. Figure on this, collect 25% tax from a personearning GBP 10,000 per year, or 2-3% on a man earning GBP 500,000 a year interest alone (and there are plenty of them). And at lower tax, the local (resident) population then have more disposable income, lifestyles improve, govt colloect more revenue, and ooops, everyone a winner. The option exists, but only for a seperate state, located at the intersection between EU and Arab states. Now, does it really take a genius?

hi pikey its true to judge this because christofias is quite new to the game and no one has actually sussed him out yet!!!!! i suppose only time will tell if he is cut from the same cloth as that clueless papadopoulos, i do know that volkan readers are the most loyalist to cyprus not sure bout their views on progression cos more than 20% voted to the anan plan which is a way of progression warm regards ukturk

i would love nothing more than to be identified as a cypriot from cyprus . pre 74 pre 56 when facist groups are formed and take it upon themselves to ethinic clense how can you not worry much less forget. i can assure all, that these groups still exist in the minds of the people who wish to carry on with this segragation and superiorism. we are one whether greek or turkish descendency . democracy is great but as the greeks out number the turkish by nearly 3-1 i cant see how it will be democratic as you are all probably aware its who you know here not what you know. my family have been here in cyprus for over 200 years where do the greeks want us to go.
