Just wondering if anyone has any contacts for getting Wrought Iron railings... We need something to keep our dog in, and keep other big dogs out...! The wall simply isn't high enough... I have been told there are different qualities of product available and that genuine wrought iron is super expensive...? Anyone got any idea about this? We want something in the middle I guess...? Just want to get a couple of quotes or find out how much per metre etc? Thanks!!

The big thing with iron railings is the maintanance - even using proper hammerite only lasts a year before rust starts to come through in those in direct sunlight (weird, those in the shade last a lot longer) Seriously think about other options ! Mark

Thanks Mark...much appreciated... What other options would you suggest? We did think about wooden trellis but were told this would be really expensive and may not last long?? Planting would be an option but we have really great views and we don't want to totally obscure them... Why is nothing ever simple...?! Any ideas!?? Anyone??!

Spanna I would look at concrete balustrades and see if they are suitable I wouldn't bother with anything made of wood due to cost/durability/maintenance I've seen alloy tube railings that look good, but think they would be expensive Mark

If you do get railings, the curly bits might look nice, but they double the time to do the job. Mark

I would agree with message 5 MarkyPiazza...... I had some concrete balustades done back in 2005 the guy who installed them used good paint, still as good as new, also look nicer. stevie-d

I would also recommend Okten of Arman Metal Company, he has recently made gates and railings for our villa, his work is excellent and very reasonably priced, he is very reliable and turns up on time too.

Thanks everyone for your advice and recommendations and thanks for the advice about the 'curly bits'!!! Hadn't thought of that! I will approach both places mentioned for quote. I fear that concrete balustrades may look a little out of place on our stone wall... but thanks anyway - I can see how they would be far less hassle... Thanks again and Merry Christmas!!

The curly bits do help keep the dogs in/out! Painting each year is not required if you do a good job. Use Ronseal satin or hammered finish, not smooth.
