At The End Of The Day; It's Not Rocket Science and What Goes Around Comes Around have been voted the most common cliches used at work in a survey.

Everyone has got their pet hates when it comes to cliches. Do you have one that makes you cringe when you hear it?

"At the end of the day" I hate that cliche, it's meaningless. When someone says it to me I always say "it gets dark". It usually takes them a second or two to realise I'm taking the piss. My other pet hates are "for free", we always used to say "free" but the Yanks decided we should say it the way they do, and the past tense of "dive", "dove" instead of "dived". Dove is a bloody bird!

"Blue Sky Thinking"

"Thinking Outside of the Box"

"Let's put in on the back burner"

"Cascade the info" - I always thought a cascade was a sort of waterfall?

My son used to work for a posh car dealership - if he were here, he could come up with some absolute classics.

Aargh....................................................

I blame the yanks

teatime - I work for a GP surgery - our senior partner's fave (there's another one!) is "not fit for purpose". This is usually in reference to something that will improve things, but he can't be bothered to learn how to do it (i.e. new computer programme).

sanranc - see, I've obviously worked in some weird organisations

However, I think the worse one I've heard of is this:

A friend of mine's fiance had an old (vintage-type) car that finally gave up the ghost. When she asked him what he was going to do with it, he replied:

"I don't really know; put it in a glass case and throw sugar at it".

Anyone got any ideas on this?

we had a chat in the office and decided 'to die for' ie, the pudding was 'to die for', or the view was 'to die for', why would anyone want to die for something they thought was good!!!

Must agree about "to die for". Another one of my pet hates is "tweaking", e.g. a document just needs "tweaking" before it can be finalised. What happened to "changed"?

In a previous life, I went to my director and told him that we had a problem !!

His response was " there are no such things as problems, merely windows of opportunity "

7. Going Forwards

Pushing the Envelope - what for and where would you push it?

In Real Terms - as opposed to unreal terms?

Have these sayings got origins, for example It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. This is derived from the old wooden fleet when the Cannon balls were stored on "monkeys" made from brass and when it got cold the metal would contract and the cannon balls would fall off!!!

"End Of" I can't stand it when someone say's "Thats it end of"

normally said when they have lost an argument and or realise they are in the wrong and can't/won't apologise or just can not think of anything intelligent to say.

msg 15 Jeannie, "There is no I in team" the response to that which is just as naff is "but there is ME if you look close enough" aaaaaargh
