Damn thats my 1st real summer in our new apt blown!!! Thank god I used my credit card!!! It really is crap for us Scots to get to N.Cyprus. I must be a jinx - the year we signed the contract on our apt CTA withdrew all flights from Glasgow then the next best thing was Globespan from Edinburgh to Paphos!!! Happy Xmas!!!!!

Yep...Karakum5c...I know exactly what you mean, just got back last week from NC and have always used Flyglobespan in the winter..All thats left now from Oct-Apr is Thomson once a week from Glasgow just wait and see I bet fares rocket up now due to the competition being wiped out!!! Can only hope Ryanair or someone else comes along... although with the current financial climate being the way it is I'm not very hopeful and certainly can't see CTA coming back...in fact looks as if they could go tits up very shortly, then what for NC???? Happy Xmas to you too!!!!!

That is really bad newes, but steps are being taken to stop this no protection if you book on line. Not much consolation for those who have lost out now. When you read the link it makes you wonder why an airline who made that sort of profit and has that many forward bookings, goes to the wall.

I feel so sorry for the people stranded away from home. When XL went burst we were stranded in Larnaca Airport. After being told to report for a flight departing at 6p.m. on the Sunday we were told there wouldn't be a flight until the next morning at 6a.m. To cut a long story short yup we did eventually leave Larnaca on the Monday night at 6.30p.m. but we were flown to Gatwick and bused from there back to Glasgow. The stuff on nightmares but at least we eventually made it back. Pity the poor souls who were looking forward to their Christmas or New Year on holiday. They were still advertising in this mornings paper too.

But did you know that you can also claim the money back if you have paid on your Visa Debit card? And unlike your credit card, which imposes a minimum spend of £100, you can claim back any amount of money. The process is called Visa Debit Chargeback, and, as the name suggests, is a procedure in which the banks will ‘charge back’ the value of the original transaction directly from the supplier’s bank, and pass this amount on to you. All banks who issue Visa cards have only recently agreed to process chargeback requests, and there is still widespread confusion over what it is and how it works. Therefore if you meet a dead end in your discussions with bank staff, persist. The facility is there for you to take advantage of. Invoking the chargeback procedure Cont...

If you suspect your card has been used fraudulently, if the goods and services you bought with your card are faulty or if they do not materialise, then you should contact the bank who has provided you with your Visa debit card within 120 days, requesting they initiate the chargeback process. It does not mean you will automatically and immediately get your money back. It will initially become a ‘dispute’ in which the claim will be fully investigated by both banks before any money is returned. Addendum: This Visa Chargeback Scheme also applies to Visa Credit Cards Does anyone know if this is true? Navek

Kara5..Oil is damn sight cheaper now than 9months ago. This airline only recently posted a £1.3 million profit for last year when oil was up in80/90$ mark.It was down as low as $46 not long ago.I see on the news they expanded far to quickly in 7yrs they have been going.Government contract to run to Falklands as well.Think might be a case of bad management. It is terrible that they have been taking money off people when they new severl weeks/months ago they were in trouble. You dont just suddenly run out of money like that. There accountants ought to be question ed about there business ethics if they allowed them to carry on knowing they were in trouble.

Its been the same in the North East for the last couple of years, only a few flights from Newcastle (45 minutes away) at extortionate prices forcing us to fly from Manchester (2+ hours away). In fact if you don't live near Stansted or Heathrow you have had it! Vicki

Vicki Takes the shine off NC when its so difficult and expensive to get there...I have friends who have a villa in Moraira in Spain and they can decide at the last minute on say a Thursday to have a long weekend there and have any amount of flights to choose from starting at £45!!!!! Ok...Spain is maybe not where any of us want to be or go ...But to be able to escape the UK at the drop of a hat without being shafted does have a certain appeal!!!

I heard this morning that staff working for them didn't know anything about it. Big shock, and they were still advertising up to the day they went bust. Some folk from Tyneside were booked to fly to Egypt with them too. They would rather fly from Glas than Manchester, but they may get a replacement from Newcastle

the easyjet option from edinburgh or glasgow via gatwick/larnaca is a good one and cheap one of my wifes pals did it recently with an overnight stop in a hotel at garwick it was cheap but tight going back to Larnaca as only 2 hours between flights so if easyjet from north is late you could end up missing flight worth looking at easyjet and diffrent options

Hi we did the easyjet route from Edinburgh to Gatwick then gatwick to Larnaca. It cost £170 for 4 flights and we chose to go on the last flight the night before to avoid a 3/4 a.m. ride to the airport. The price includes 2 nights in the Gatwick travellodge . That was £32 split 3 ways so very affordable. Liz

Msg 19 / 20 I have suggested the jury was out - do not always blame the accountants or the management. See the following that partly expalins why Globespan has fallen down: Globespan was 'owed £36m by E-Clear' Friday, December 18, 2009 Chris Gray Flyglobespan was owed more than £30 million in payments from credit card payment processing company E-Clear. The money included £20 million from passengers who had already travelled and about £16 million from customers who were yet to go on holiday. --------------------- Scottish finance secretary John Swinney This company has been badly let down by the fact that a private company, handling bookings on their behalf, has not paid them money that they were due. That is the inesc........

flightholiday Absolutely shocking that a credit card holding company which was due to pay that money has cost 600 people their jobs and has put what now looked like a reasonably"solvent company" down....that is just criminal!!!!...also knowing the circumstances it doesn't say a great deal about Flyglobespan's *ankers!!!

Arrived back from Lanzarote last night with Monaarch There were quite a number of Scottish families staying on our complex that had booked with globespan thankfully they were all sorted early on by their families in the uk who went on line in Scotland booked flights with Thompson the first they knew about globespan going bust was when they all received calls from their families yesterday morning. In the all inclusive resort next to ours the manager called all the globespan holiday makers to a meeting and informed them that globespan had not paid their hotel bill and they would all be receiving a bill of the hotel on departure you can guess what the response was from the holiday makers. Keep posting Keep smiling Kennyb

The Greek Cypriots who run E-clear should be thrown in jail after all they have destroyed an airline and as European citizens they should face the full fury of the EU. The Scottish Government should seek their extradition to face trial in Scotland and all their assets should be seized especially their houses !

A lot of questions have still yet to be answered...I believe that we will hear a lot more about E-clear's involvement in all this...I see that a travel company (Allbury) operated by E-clear has been placed into administration just yesterday raising more questions as to where Globespans missing millions have gone?? Lothian and borders police are now preparing to investigate possible fraudulent activities of Elias Elia and E-Clear.. also its reported they are 3 months late in lodging accounts with Companies House.

Comments in trade press today. TTG understands that police have been in contact with sources close to the investigation into the collapse of Globespan. There is no suggestion of a formal police investigation but officers are understood to have approached at least two people close to the situation. It comes as Globespan administrators took legal action against Globespan’s credit card payment processing firm E-Clear ............ ............ Administrators for Globespan, Pricewater-houseCoopers, ....card payment processing company E-Clear was withholding £35 million in payments to the failed airline and operator. Allbury Travel Group was owned by British Virgin Islands-based Allbury Ltd, which is controlled by Elias Elia, chief executive of E-Clear.... E-Clear is based in Berkeley Square in London’s Mayfair. The same address is home to Elian Developers UK, which runs property developments in Cyprus. ---------- ------ ---- Allbury also failed owed £p by E-clear

While away things have been afoot - I have heard (be they true stories or not) 1. The staff from Globespan are thinking of going to a tribunal 2. An order for the administration of payment processing firm E-Clear was made by the High Court yesterday (Tuesday). The move by Mr Justice Vos followed the failure of EClear to submit evidence of funds of £35 million on Friday related to the collapse of Scottish operator Globespan. 3. From the hearsay it seems that EClear’s owner is not in the clear and no guesses where they think he has invested his money.

From a reliable travel trade source today: Boss of failed credit card company E-Clear, Elias Eliais being sued for £7 million in unpaid loans by his former adviser. News of the lawsuit came as more details emerged about Elia’s background, including confirmation from Cypriot police that shots were fired at his parents’ house. The adviser said he lent Elia and E-Clear money between 2008 and 2009. The loans were personally guaranteed by Elia. according to a report in the Mail on Sunday. E-Clear was put into administration earlier this month, owing more than £100 million, including £35 million to failed airline and operator group Globespan. Adminstrators for Globespan and E-Clear are now looking at whether any funds were diverted to other businesses, like Elian property development company in Cyprus.

A little bit of information in today from TravelWeekly a trade rag (article date 25 feb but the despatch came in later yesterday): Another company linked to failed credit card processing firm E-Clear has ceased trading. Canadian operator Go Travel South, formerly called Go Travel Direct, ceased operations yesterday. Reports in the Canadian press suggested it would be bringing home customers in resort, but around 2,000 customers yet to fly would be out of pocket. ------- The E-clear thing is a mess and very painful for companies that have lost money as well as their clients - it seems that Mr Elia from Cyprus may be responsible for a lot of peole being hurt.

| More from TW today - much shortened and a little edited: E-Clear administrators uncover just £72,000 (24 March 2010) E-Clear administrators have uncovered £72,000 after months of investigations into the credit card processing firm - situation “looking bleak”. BDO business restructuring partner Malcolm Cohen said he expected “the coffers to swell”. Various avenues and assets such as E-Clear chief executive Elia’s Kensington flat, worth an estimated £3 to £4 million and bought with E-clear money, are still potentially to be realised. BDO costs of £300,000 so far and C said creditors may have to contribute if litigation was necessary. It also emerged this week that customers of collapsed Scottish airline Flyglobespan will receive just 5% of their lost money.
