Hans - a track seems to exist on the Kitchener map between Kozankoy (Larnaca ti Lapithou) and the 'fortress' - or am I mistaken? S

Really enjoyed reading that, thank you, I thought the only castle we hadn't "done" was Buffavento (which is on our list when the weather gets better) Carollynne

RE msg 2, Jetski: (...) Hans - a track seems to exist on the Kitchener map between Kozankoy (Larnaca ti Lapithou) and the 'fortress' - or am I mistaken? (...) => Sorry for my late reply - yesterday I had no Internet connection. Your remark gave me reason to study the Kitchener map again. In one way you are right: there seems to be (or: seems to have existed) a path leading to the fortress. I.e. to the area where the fortress is located. BUT! In this case there is a reason to doubt the accuracy of Mr. Kitchener and his assistants (around 1880). He (they) never found the fortress. It's not on his map, at least not on my copy of the original map. The location of the fortress may have been added to K's map later, but I have not yet found proof of it. Only the British architect George Jeffery (1918) vaguely mentions "a fortress", but he mistakenly locates it in the mountains near Karaman (Karmi). He cannot have been near or in the fortress!

Continued from msg 4: Jetski, do you have a copy of Lord Kitchener's map WITH the "Forgotten Fourth Fortress" in the right location? If so, I'd love to see it!

Gastria castle (an old Templars fortification with a violent and interesting history), Sigouris Castle (one of the many spellings in medieval documentation) and there's more... The remains of fortified houses (only the Lusignan kings had the right to own castles - the nobles were only allowed fortified houses. The kings didn't trust their servants one little bit!)... Anyway, you gave me a good idea: I'll write an illustrated lecture for the "Medieval Cyprus Fellowship" about lesser known (remains of) castles and fortified houses and the noble families who lived there for centuries. |
