Apparently there is a building designated for Lidl in Larnaca, but won't open till March 2010. Very similar shop in Larnaca tho, called Elomas close to the main m/way by the Limassol roundabout turnoff .

Smithy, Carollynne, M6. Thank you for the replies. M6 I saw that website via Google but it says very little about timing ! Only that they are recruiting people for various stores in various towns. Dee, we would all rather live in a perfect world somewhere ! As for Tesco and Waitrose, they are not here, they are not going be here in the nearest future, and not all people have got an affinity for British food. Thanks again all. CL

Hi mmmmmmmmmmm, That's an old website that I first saw at least 4 years ago. I heard Lidl were being opposed by the GC shopkeepers "union"? The last thing Cypriots want is good competition!

RE msg 8, DC4: (...) lidl or an aldi if you don't want english food. (...) => Lidl and Aldi are, as far as I remember, Germany based firms - they both sell only B and C quality goods (often from Germany).

deecyprus, as DC said they are german companies and are based all over Europe, how can you say they sell sub standard produce if you have never shopped in one. I have shopped in their stores, as we have both in my area and welcome the change they give from other supermarkets but would not shop in them all the time. In the recession in UK they have become very popular. I disagree their produce is sub standard, no different to any other supermarket imo.

RE: Msg 9, I totally agree. Dee if you think that the continent eats sub-standard food then I pity you. As DC wrote, its German and has good quality, maybe you should overcome your embarrassment and try them sometime. On the continent people do shop according to their purse, and personal taste, and not their perceived status. They both also sell nice Italian, Belgian, French, Greek, Spanish etc. food. CL

Well Clarissa you will be ok then if one opens in the south, personally I would prefer one to open in the North as that is where I live for part of the year. dalartokat, I will stick to my usual stores thankyou, but I do know ppl who have shopped in lidl and aldi and they think they are sub standard, so who do I believe, you or my friends

Dee I would like to see all sorts of shops in the north but they are not here, and I ask practical questions and not intentionally give opportunties for personal sniping - its not my style. I asked a genuine question and others replied with useful help, my thanks to them. CL

I think personally (I'm talking about the UK here, by the way) that the best way to shop, if you have the time, is definitely to 'shop around', particularly in the current economic climate. We tend to do the bulk of our shopping in Sainsbury's. However, I go to Tesco if I see particular bargains advertised and I have also bought the odd things from Lidl - there were stuffed vine leaves, for one, which were delicious - far better than Sainsbury's were selling and much cheaper. I have a friend who shops in both Lidl and Aldi on a regular basis; she maintains that all their produce tastes the same as more expensive brands. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't. All a question of taste, I think, but, on the whole, I tend to prefer Sainsbury or Tesco. Actually, I love Waitrose and M & S but I'm afraid the purse won't stretch to that. However, they (M & S) are doing some good deals on things this Christmas. Horses for Courses? Merry Christmas everyone. J x

Sorry Dee used both Llidl and Aldi on a regular basis, and still use Aldi for several items when we go back to Uk. Lidl could be a bit basic, but some excellent offers. Aldi not sub standard. I would say superb. many of the items as good as M&S , but much cheaper. Hope your well and have a good festive season xx

There is nothing wrong with Lidel- when we are in the Greek Islands the first thing we did was to find a Lidel quality wine at cheap prices and when we lived in Spain they even had a butchers departement. I remember a couple of deels they had on Speyside malt whiskey 12 euroes and congac 6 euroes!!! I certainly hope they manage to open a branch or branches here.

Q. What's Blue Yellow and Red and full of rubbish? Answer. A Lidl carrier-bag! Actually one of the brilliant things they do sell are top quality freezer bags 'Aromata' they are tough as old boots and perfect for storing prepared meals for another day without fear of splits etc. Always bring some back with us after a visit.

Dee/carollynne - it's not just teenagers. Paul is what I would call a "shopping snob" - he refuses to go into either Lidl or Aldi J

Shopping snobs are often also fashion victims. More money (usually other peoples) than sense.

Yes I remember the halcyon days of the 80,s and 90s, everything was designer, named shirts and trousers etc, never spent less than £90 on shoes, if you went in the wine bar in anything other than a silk tie somone would always cut the end off. My god how times change, now it,s man at Matalan, Peacocks or Primark.

Messages 24/25 - Although I consider my husband to be a bit of a 'food shopping snob' I have to say that it definitely ends there. He is definitely a walking advert for 'Matalan Man'. J

I popped inti Lidl in Cardiff last week and was very surprised at the range of Italian products. I went in for fresh veg as it was the closest shop to me and I found thier mellons excellent as was thier tomatoes (spanish). They had many branded products that we all know at a fraction of the cost of say Tesco Asda . They are very popular all across Europe now. As Hippo says some excellent bargains Baieys 5 pound 80 a bottle. My son went ballastic when he saw me walk in with a Lidl carrier bag but enjoyed the melon and parma and the baileys. I think they provide a place in this economic climate. The store was hugh. Cant comment on Aldi as I have never been in one xx
