Hi and Merry Christmas to one and all.

Can anyone advise me if there is a Christmas Day service at the Kyrenia C of E Church (the little white one behind the big car park), the time it starts, and also if there is a Watchnight service on Christmas eve?

Many Thanks

Think Elizabeth of Hungary, the R.C. church in the road down to the end of the harbour will also be doing something, but cannot find out. Any Roman Catholics out there who know?

As to Watchnight Service that is something I asked for here, but apparently it has never been part of the tradition over here. Shame innit?

Thanks, but I did hear it might be a Nigerian style, slappy happy clappy service. I hope not, or I will stay at home and sing Carols, but if there is a midnight traditional style, then i will go. Over to you to find out. And thanks.

I can find out the times of Mass later at St Elizabeth of Hungary but there is a notice on the church door and outside the Post Office giving times of Masses.

Thank you Dusterbruce. Noon rules it out for us too due to other engagements. Shame no one does the midnight stuff, but, as they say, 'this is cyprus'

As for Holy cross, isn't that the one at Paphos Gate in the south, with Padre Umberto and others. There is no R.C this side of the border. So, it means that one has either to walk over at Ledra Palace or cross with the car at Metehan and drive along . Not the best idea.

But thanks a million for the info.

Have a great Christmas.

In the good old days when the border was sealed you could enter Holy Cross Church through the back door without crossing to the dark side.

A good point though that if you crossed at Ledra Palace or Metehan you would be safe walking in the city at that late hour, unlike in UK!

Thanks Dusterbruce. I agree that you would be safe, but for my husband the walk is a killer!

I know the church well, and even spent a couple of nights there in the early 90's as I was friends with one of the Friars, now 'promoted'! My daughter and I stayed in the church to enable us to take Father Brian over the border, and I remember he showed me how the gardener used to come from the north through the backdoor. Shame we can't use that any more!

And yes, I think they were 'good old days' even though the border was there, but I preferred the Cyprus of 20 years ago, both sides. Where I used to live in Limassol is no longer local folk, but coffee bars galore and touristic - so, as the song says 'Nothing ever stays the same.'

Happy memories.

Lilli, St Padre Pio has so many lovely stories about his life works if you google 'padre pio miracles' His mystical experiences and healings are legendary. As you know, whilst kneeling before a crucifix, stigmata formed on his body and remained there for 50 years, until just before his death.

Happy Christmas to you all.
