For those who may not have heard the news from any other channel this is to remind folk that the Mayor of Girne invites 'residents' to his cocktail party, this year back at The Dome (last year it was the Malpas) on Wednesday 23rd December from 14.00 to 16.00 hrs. It is rumoured that he is expecting around 400 people to attend! This is a wonderful chance for ex pats to meet each other and feel that they DO belong !

I would have thought he'd have better things to do with the money being spent especially as the expatriate community who predominantly pay their 'council' water rates & bills on time and yet are still denied the vote! The man's an idiot and runs away every time he sees me, which is not often enough!

What a great idea. Saw a poster advertising this in the car park at the top of the High Street today.

This is done every year and it is the same people in the photos every year just there for the freebie!!!!!!!!!!!!

MarieB

With all due respect there are loads of ways ex-pats can meet, but only IF they want to meet other people.

Dare to be different. Of course there are those who go for the freebies; of course there are the posers who make sure they are 'in the picture' but why not go as part of the goodwill of the season. Spread some instead of seeing those who don't. Talk to someone who may be lonely! Take only y our fair share of the grub and booze (personally I hardly ever take any cos I don't want to end up at 23 stone like grandma,, but it is a great chance to see folk I see only once in a blue moon).

Go and show the world that some of the Brits are not greedy and grabbing, but caring and sharing.

Maybe this year WE can get our pictures in the paper - but who cares!

But if you really want yours in, come and pose for me and my little camera and I will see what might be done.

See some of you there, then?

MarieB,

Bloody hell you have an answer for everything!!!!!!!!!!!!

+Maybe this year it will be YOUR picture in the papers instead of the usual ones. The world has had enough of my ugly mug this year so it is a no go for me, and as proud Scots we don't do freebies anyway.

Merry Christmas to you and him downstairs hopefully meet you in the New Year.

MARIE I think its wonderful of them to do it to make us feel wecome. However the carrier bag brigade has spoit it for us. I cannont beleive it for charity events they come with take away bags. I know as it has happened to us. I only hope that the hospitality is not seen in a bad light now xxx

Liz - I must be honest and say that events like the one featured here are not my cup of tea, but I find the idea of people going along with bags, to enable them to take stuff away, absolutely disgraceful, particularly when the event is for charity.

Just goes to show how low some people will stoop.

Will speak soon.

RE msg 14, Jeannie: (...) Just goes to show how low some people will stoop. (...)

=> Well said, Jeannie. I'm ashamed to be an expat also, who thus might be included in the "carrier bag brigade" (quote from Liz' post nr 12 in this thread) or the "freeloaders gang". The only way we can and should fight these despicable people is keep on mentioning their behaviour in the local press and on the boards.

P.S. Read the excellent letters about this subject in Cyprus Today (Saturday, December 12 and 19, 2009).

I agree that we should not all be tarred with the same brush, and let's show the world that we are NOT. bUT THE mAYOR'S 'DO' IS NOT THE SAME AS nccct 'DO'. I reckon that if the charity charged for tea and coffee and cakes individually, there would be far less stuff disappear. In fact they couldn't afford to buy it!!!!

Again I reckon that those of us who are 'decent folk' with good standards should go and 'shine' and put the others to shame, plus, of course a few 'nameand shame' in the press.

So I look forward to seeing you all there, without bags, plastic, paper or otherwise, just to share some festive greetings! ??????

And thanks , Newscoop, for missing me. Even I have not yet mastered the technique of being in two places at once.

And to Nurse-Not-So-Awfull - I do try to have an answer to most things, in fact there are many people who would confirm that I am most 'trying'.

Have a great Christmas !

Just a suggestion.

Can't someone stick the bags over their heads and march them out of the door?

AJ Msg 13

Your track record on keeping appointments is somewhat suspect, so your RSVP to the Mayor could be held well in the balance!

I would do it for you (believe me I would) but it is a little far away to come for just one "do".

You could always threaten to have a designated camera-person at the ready to capture any person (with bag in hand) taking food, and upload all the photos on here or/and other TRNC BB's.

Name and Shame is the name of the game here to stop this theft!

It might be free, but it is not a licence for a carryout.

Richard

I do keep them all with the right people.

Who knows I still may be able to slot you in over Christmas.

But the first beer will have to be on you 'cos I am all spent out on the latest batch of freshly printed fivers.

Smile.

I went to the Malpas last year, the thing that amused me most was when everyone started to sing 'he's a jolly good fellow' to the Mayor.

I will be there standing on the feet of as many of those sycophantic b******* as I can.

Come on guys - 'goodwill to all men' including the Mayor of Girne!

Let me reassure the ex naval man that I haven't been a member of BRS for years, but some of my best friends are, and I promise to be there with my camera, all ready to snap the ones who pile their plates the highest.

And don't forget, it is a 'freebie' to us all, and I think it is kind of the Mayor to continue to do this as I am sure when he started there were but a handful of ex pats. Now he is faced with hundreds. Surely they are not all 'starving' and if any of them are reading this, they won't DARE to be seen to be too hungry!

And as Tiny Tim said 'God bless us every one' (including the Mayor of Girne)

We are not members of BRS but go to this party every year .

It is nice to see friends and the Mayor whom we know personally.

It is better to be grateful , appreciate what you have got .

Never seen any "naughty"Brits at the party.

I wish I knew the Mayor personally then I would ask him why the non-Cypriots get charged twice the amount to join the Girne Belediye tennis club than the Cypriots and not only that, he rubber stamped this proposal when it was put to him. That is racist/prejudice or whatever you would like to call it so as you can see there is no point going to complain to the top in this case

Liz,

Put a breadboard down your back!!

We lived here fulltime for 6 years and always paid our bill on time, they have the records to prove it, and when we moved into our new house we too had to pay the extortionate rates for connection and the meter then thankfully a very good friend of ours offered to be a guarantor for us so we could get the lower rate.

Anyway, we feel the same and will not be going to listen to the bull, we did it in the first year and never again.
