One Christmas a few years back, a mother announced to her family that she was no longer prepared to chase up her children to write their 'thank you' notes. As a result, the children's grandmother never received acknowledgements of the generous cheques she'd sent. The following year, however, things were very different. "The children came over - in person - to thank me" she triumphantly informed a friend. "How wonderful!" replied her friend " but do tell me. What do you think caused this change in their behaviour?" "Oh, that's easy" Grandma replied. " THAT year I didn't sign their cheques." ! HAPPY XMAS, EVERYONE ON C.44

Bill, funny you should say that (and it was funny). My old Mum used to give me a fiver for Christmas in the 60's/70's (it was considered a King's ransom then). She carried on giving me a fiver for many years and, when my son got to the age of 'just money, please, Nan' (for Christmas) she carried on giving him five pounds. We never did tell her that we used to make it up to more. Ah, God rest her soul. How times have changed. I was speaking to a young mum I work with last week who told me she had spent approximately £400.00 on each of her 2 children this Christmas. Good grief, I'm soft, but that's ridiculous. J

Bill, you are so right. We had collected £105 in Nectar points, which we save up all year and spend at Christmas. Paul went last Friday and managed to spend the whole lot (plus £8.00) on booze and some cheese. We are going to do our 'big shop' on Wednesday (2 of us this Christmas, as son and girlfriend in Australia and friends gone to France) and I dread to think how much it's going to come to! I wouldn't mind, but we're out for a meal on Boxing night. It would be cheaper for 10 days in the bloody Caribbean! Regards to you both and hope you have a good 'un. Paul and Jean

I went to Asda today. It was unnusually quiet, and you could get around quite comfortably thank goodness. I had already bought the meat, the starter and deserts so didnt need any of those. My shopping bill came to £108 for two of us and that did not include the booze. I think I will try that Jeannie and save up the Nectar points. What a good idea. Tx

taraspring - goodness, lovey, isn't it a nightmare? Paul has just pointed out how much we actually spent to get the £105'ish rewards. Lovey, don't even go there! It's horrendous! Admittedly, we don't have too much more to get - just as well, considering there are just the two of us this year. Anyway, my partner in crime (happy solutions), I wish you and yours a Very Happy Christmas and a Very Healthy and Prosperous 2010. With love Jeannie xxxxxxxxxx
