Hi All,

This is a bit heavy and i apologise for being a bit grim reaperish but. What would happen if the constitutional court decides to close the a.k.p. party in Turkey.Would they still be welcome in the e.u. or would they follow a more islamic route and turn to countries like Iran for support.Where would the t.r.n.c. stand then.

It is a possibility and I am sure the army is behind it but it is something they cannot handle, too big even for them. We will see. If AKP is colsed down, they will not want to turn to the east and the west will not welcome them. So they will be in a very sticky position.

hi guys,

the whole thing is totally cringe-making for north cyprus

and the dispute is certainly music to the ears of anti-turkish elements in europe

it is hard to be certain but it seems not to be simply a case of islamic militants against modernisers: the ak garners broad support from small business people in the provinces pitting them against the bosphorus elite,

turkey's westernised "establishment"...

the ak poses as strongly pro-europe ie the eu accession process while the headscarf issue may just be a token or could be the start of something bigger

the elite feels seriously threatened though and are taking "steps" yet many experts guess that while the ak may well be for the chop they are likely to be reborn with a different name in the medium term...

the generals have been muttering and secular turks shown their concern in huge demonstations a year ago

nonetheless there seems little role for "advice" from europe and we would do very well to stay strictly out of this imbroglio and hold back on the usual self-righteous rhetoric

it is pretty bad news for cyprus because any reminders that turkey has an islamic tradition as well as a secular hisory is ammunition for those who would portray turkey and north cyprus as outside any european cultural hegemony despite the facts on the ground demonstrating quite the opposite view

the idea that a "paralysed" turkey would act as a brake on a solution for cyprus tho' is about as relevant as the oft-repeated buttotally ludicrous

"turkey is using cyprus to get into the eu" old twaddle

then again if the army stages a coup, possible but rather unlikely, I think europe for once should shut up because any tendencious remarks will not help anyone except give certain european politicians and their voters a warm glow

lastly it is extremely unlikely that a sunni nation would turn to iran for "support"

except in the specific case of syria where a set of very unusual factors apply

newlad if you really want to be grim reaperish let me hit you with slogans eg

collateral damage will be very stictly controlled

new world energy order

if cooling system power in the worlds 2000 atomic reactors fails they have at least seven days' diesel to run the backup generators to drive the pumps and thus prevent the core catching fire and bursting the containment vessel

I sincerely hope that Turkey and TRNC never join EU. It is now just a job for the boys club with the rich getting richer and the poor in the short term enjoying increased income. All the East European countries, as RoC is already heading towards, will experience rising inflation and the consequences. If a poll were to be taken today across most countries in W. Europe they would want to withdraw.

Turkey potentially hold the trump card with the oil and gas pipelines passing through with the government activley trying for more.

As for the xenophobic views of aligning with Iran etc, I would prefer that than the war mongering USA. In recent times they have unilaterally invaded 2 sovereign nations dragging unwilling UN partners along. There are now more people dying daily in Iraq than ever did when Saddam was in charge.

Hi All,

So where has it all gone wrong for the a.k.p. party and when will the constitutional court decide if they are to be ousted.Who actually sits on this court.Seems like worrying times ahead. What i also cant understand is the fact that they were such a popular choice when they were elected only last year, and their leader Erdogan is supposed to be very popular,

Regards,

Paul.
