My licence for Norton Anti Virus (2009) has just run out. I didn't realise it was only valid for 12 months - thought it was forever. Anyone know where I can get another copy that won't cost the earth - or anyone got a licence no.???!!!!

Sorry, I didn't get that quite right. Hubby tells me it's not just the anti-virus we've got but it's Norton Security Management software suite. The free ones you mention are no good.

Norton security is the worse thing you could use on a computer. Use the free ones to stop viruses and download tune up utilities 2010 to optimize your computer.

Can you not simply renew the licence online? They usually send out reminders.

Your options are that you buy online through Norton to renew your licence (you'll find a link within the main security centre to go straight to their site or just click the link when it reminds you that you need to pay) , or uninstall Norton all together and install the free Anti Virus and Firewalls.

Top of the popular lists are AVG for Anti Virus and Zone Alarm for Firewall.

One other thing to note is that Norton takes up a lot of space in the main processing chip and in the available instant memory. This has the effect of actually slowing down your computer. By loading other software you will notice that programmes run and load quicker too, and if you have a light that shows you that the Hard Drive is working, you will notice that this flashes slower, meaning your computer is doing what you want it to do without Norton poking its nose in at every operation your processor is doing.

hey, so here is the answer you need, this programm were tested and it was the one which made the first place in antivirus software on a freeware basis (even it had a top ranking under payable licence).

Its not only antivirus but also a defence center, blocking all unwanted applications to extract into your registry.. it is very easy to use and I am very impressed.. You can choose different options so it will not interfere while you do changes or installations on your pc.. Why I like this programm alot is not only it detects antivirus on your pc but also hinders immediatly any extraction in your registry.. most antivir programms detect the virus but cant stop them from installation once activated (by mistake)..

COMODO Internet Security is the name of this toy! Free forever!

BTW: deinstall norton, then restart your pc (without internet connection) then run the tune up 2010 and clear your registry.. restart your pc again and install comodo.. now you can travel internet freely and safe again

Tune Up 2010: http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

you may use this key to get it free for a lifetime: XJMC7T-TB5CRE-KA08Q3-D272AT-HBF78B-79XFMH ( I found this key on the internet - this programm was not hacked by me.. ) If you like the programm, buy a copy for 30 USD.. Like I did..

I think by now you have got the message - de-install norton it really does overload your computer - i ran test on this program and it places between 55-65% 'overload' on your system, which slows down other applications & programs as well as make your hard drives work overtime and there is a conflict with windows 7.

If you are concerned - try AVG or the programs suggested on the other threads. I have used several a/v programs but found AVG to do all it promises. You may also want to install a separate firewall or at least ensure the windows firewall is operative.

Another point, be careful if you use 'wifi hot spots' - do not place a check mark in the (irritating) little window which tells you that you may be downloading/connecting to un-encrypted sites, this switches the function off and it remains in force for the remainder of the session and leaves you wide open.

Hope this helps.

Hi...I have been using Norton 360 for the last two years...never had any problems so am sticking with it. The cheapest way to purchase it is on-line new ( not renew your licence )

Buy the licence for 3 users ( approx £40 )..you can then spread the cost over 3 people ( £13 each per year..with constant updates..and....peace of mind )

To install you will need to uninstall your current and install the new...simple action

Whatever you choose, would appreciate feedback later on in the year

Pippie,

£22 via ebay for Norton 360 version 3. Guy was really helpful - had to uninstall old norton first by downloading 'norton removal tool' then install Trial version via link given - then install code given.

You then change the password and email given to yours and thats it - all done for another year!

It took me 20 minutes to do it all.

Guy i brought it from was very helpful - i emailed him before to check if he could email me details as well as send as save waiting for UK friend to receive and forward. Which he did straight away.

This is the product descrption on ebay and his email.

Hope that helps

Hi,

I worked for IBM before retiring in 2008 so a word of support for the commercial products from one who was "in the trade" may not go amiss. - Note that having used Macefee, AVG-free and others I will not comment or knock them.

I have been using Norton for many years and in the commercial world it is often the security product-of-choice.

Nothing wrong with Symantic, their support is excellent but problems usually occur when a user has more than one anti-virus product on their system, or an old one not properly removed.

Their Internet Security / Antivirus product is on all 3 of my systems here in the north and looking through the log of removed viruses / unrequested cookies/ intrusion attempts/ portscans etc it is doing its job handsomely.

Yes it does have a processing overhead, and unfortunately the latest version updates itself perhaps too frequently on my 160Kb line which when used on Diana's small machine (Celeron) does cause a strange second or two on Itunes.

Regards
