Someone posted earlier about satnav in North Cyprus and there was a good response. I use satnav in the UK but tried the tomtom here but it didnt work that was a few years ago. Now it seems that they might start working. I am not interested in the satnav to find my way, I am interested in using the satnav to warn me when I am approaching the speed cameras. I know for instance on tomtom satnavs that you can manually enter in points of interest (poi) and that this could be used to enter the co-ordinates for the speed cameras. This as well as being very useful in avoiding the fines is also not illegal I think as the police wouldnt know that you are using it for speed camera detection.

Has someone tried this in the north. I am going to the uk soon so it would be nice to know then I can brring one with me.

RE msg 1, ataturk: (...) I am not interested in the satnav to find my way, I am interested in using the satnav to warn me when I am approaching the speed cameras. (...)

=> Save your money, ataturk. In TRNC you get three warnings (clear roadsigns with the speedlimit) before you meet the camera. Which by the way is much fairer than in Holland (where the "speedometers" were invented), where you get no warnings at all. When you drive too fast, you're caught. And since the road accidents in TRNC are still claiming many victims (this year even more than in 2008, despite the speedcameras!) they can remove the warning roadsigns in TRNC as far as I'm concerned. Indeed, I was taught a lesson after speeding three times, heavy fines and three months without a driving license. Not funny.

Thanks DC but I feel the speed cameras are there for accidents but I feel the large number they have introduced recently is only to make mony. I just came back from Magosa and there must have been at least eight from lefkosa to magosa with more to come, the situation has got ridiculous. Also the speed limit on that road is way to low. 65 kph is way too low. Its very easy to get caught I know the signs are there but if I had an audio warning as well I can relax when driving. Dont get me wrong I dont speed but sometimes its easy to get carried away.

Ataturk,

We have visual camera warnings before the cameras. If you ignore the visual warnings, you are likely to ignore the audio warnings too. So save your money.

the most common and effective pre warning detector is the road angel .

it detects static cameras and mobile radar ,i drive 40k per year and have to agree totally with d.c and elko.

at first i got caught a few times and put it down to the miles etc ....now i drive to the limit (especially town centres etc ) and have not had a fine in 7years or so.

road angel works though

ataturk,

The limit on most of road between Magosa and Lefkosa is 100km. There are several areas with limits on eg junctions for which many the limit is 75km now and villages for which the limit is correct.

Save your money and just follow the 6 or signs before each camera as Ismet has already indicated.

Personal opinion, many of the cameras have reduced the speed where it was required but there are still too many idiots flauting the limits and hence the highest death rate per thousand population anywhere on the planet.

Save your money, yours and others lives and just follow the simple road signs.

Agree with sticking to the speed limits - silly not to as they are put there for a reason, it might just be to save your life remember!

Just one question for the world at large in the TRNC: I can clearly see when the speed limit comes into force at 65K and when it ceases to be 65K. I can also clearly see when the speed limit comes into force at 50K so please can anyone tell me when the 50K limit ceases to be in force again?

I can only assume that once YOU feel that the danger has passed at 50K then you can go back to the national speed limit for that particular road - whatever that is by the way - but is there anything that tells you the speed limit has now changed? I have only ever seen one de-restriction sign at 50K and that is on the Nicosia to Ercan road.

Biggest problem I have with the speed camera's is that they are in Kph and all the cars I've driven in NC the speedo's are in Mph (and very difficult to see the kph part of the dial). When I eventually purchase a car out there, the first thing I'll do is mark the speedo on the various speed limit points.

Waddo,

Speed restrictions must be clearly marked with start and finish points, otherwise in my view that speed limit is not in accordance with the law. However, residential areas are restricted to 50 km/h unless otherwsie specified i.e. residential areas need not be marked with speed limits, its only optional.

I had a case about 5 years ago when the police reported me for violating the 50 km/h speed limit on a double lane road, but it was marked on the left side only. I objected on the grounds that it was not properly marked i.e. I was travelling on the right lane and a lorry on the left lane obstructed my view, hence I could not possibly see it. The judge retorted that it was a residential are and thus marking was not essential. I retorted back that the law said "unless specified otherwise" and pointed out that prior to that point it was a 65 km/h region and thus as far as I was concerned it was valid until the next warning. The attorney had to agree to acquittal.

Guys I do try and stick to the speed limit I am not saying that I dont what I am saying is that the speed limit where the cameras are located are not accident spots. The speed limit is 100 kph along the magosa lefkosa road but there are no cameras positioned where the speed limit is 100 kph only where the speed limit is 65 kph. In my opinion this is a deliberate action to make money. I have not received a fine for a long time now but I have a tom tom so I thought it would be a good idea to have an audible warning as well. In the uk we have this and it helps alot for my drivers.

If anyone is using a satnav here and they have this facility please let me know

they are money scams ,they do not save lives in fact they contribute to accidents ,a borough in swindon

had recently banned speed cameras and has made little difference to road accidents ,with the number

of fatalities dropping .

swindon borough leaders say ,figures vindicate the fact that cameras make no difference to fatal

accidents ,or any other accident.

as we get used to these gatsos ,some boroughs introduce even more complicated cameras too catch

motorist ,we now have to put up with average speed cameras ,which changes speeds all the time ,so by

the time you get off the motorway your not even sure if you have broken the speed limit.

money ,just money.

Totally agree Musin msg. 12. In U.K. it was stated that camera's are only put at accident black spots. A few years ago they built a new dual carriageway on the outskirts of Bath and erected a camera before the road was even opened, so how the hell could that be classed as an 'Accident Black Spot'?
