Can anyone please inform me of exactly what this process consisted? I mean, factual data rather than opinion.

For example, would it be possible for me to learn of the name of the original GC owner of the land on which my Esentepe villa now sits, and exactly what he was granted in exchange for it 34 years ago?

Perhaps someone could advise me of a link I could access to research this topic?

The GC would have been granted nothing. TC refugees who left land in the South were given land here in exchange for handing their deeds to the government here, there was no physical exchange with any GCs. It is possible to find out who the original owner was but not sure how this is done.

You can find out the info from the land registry in South Lefkosia. Do not know its location but you take your site details and they may tell you.

As in msg 2, there is no such thing as an exchange, that has been estate agent speak for most folk to imply there was some legallity to owning former GC property.

Rottolover/Msg 1:

I wouldn't go delving about at the Land Registry in (South) Nicosia, I were you - you could well find yourself arrested - especially if you are a Brit!

Yes good advice to steer clear of the GC land registry. . Best to put aside the 'previous ownership' issue and just enjoy what you have.

You can indeed inquire at the ROC land registry in Nicosia. You will certainly not be arrested. You too are an EU citizen.

Of course it would be prudent not to divulge precisely what or where you live and own.

Certainly you can identify the land and from there the ROC should be able to identify title holder according to the ROC register.

Exchange land is not in anyway recorded in the register and the ROC will not entertain any such claim.

I have found the ROC land registry quite ameneable in providing information.

Billyboy,

I understand that the ROC Government will allow you to reclaim your property after you have lived in the South for (I believe) 6 months.

The 6 months restriction is, of course, an illegal restriction to your right to access your own property, according to mmmmmm...

However, given that occupying any (GC) land on this side without the permission of the GC title deed owners is also classed (by ROC, EU, UN etc obviously - not TRNC or Turkey!) as illegal, it's about as broad as it's long...

Thank you all for your replies.

Thanks Waz (nice looking yacht), could you advise where the registry office is? So far I seem only able to get lost in Nicosia...
