Does anybody know if there's anything that can be put on the lower parts of the walls to stop paint flaking off??

Its seems to be a widespread problem with many houses here.

Sounds like dampness in your cement/brickwork, from above or below.

Seems to be a common problem with builds on the Island :-(

We had kind of the same problem in Ghana , what we did was to put a Black oilpaint border about 2 feet high around the house above the ground base . Worked for us !

We have the same problem. I sanded the walls and applied 2 x coats of Trimetal Gloraprim Fix (purchased from Taif, the Marshall paint shop) and then lightly plastered and painted. So far no more flaking.

Hi There.

Earlier this year i repainted the ville with the marshall silicon paint. It covered well and should last. However, there was some flaking on the balcony and the lower walls. i have applied two coats of unibond about 1 metre from the floor. On the balcony area I tried another method which appears to be sucessful. scrape of the loose paint and plaster with a paint scrapper and apply marshalls exterior filler. comes in a tube and goes a far way. Since last April it seems to have prevented the saltin the render from coming through. Will have to see the results after the 'damp' season.

Yes this is a common problem. We used floor tiles and tiled all the way round our villa up to about 60cm which will stop the flaking forever I hope.

I feel sorry for anyone here who mentions the word damp wrt a house, and have first hand experience.........Taking a different approach we tried to fix the problem at source, not treat the symptoms. We stripped the earth away right down to the bottom of the foundations, some 1.4 M and found that there was no damproof barrier at all on the foundationwork, although there was a DPC about a foot up in the wall above ground level! Concrete is porous stuff and the water was osmoting from the surrounding earth up through the wall to the maximum level and evaporating by blowing off the paint and leaving a salty residue. We had the render stripped inside and out and replaced with a special waterproof mix, the foundations epoxy coated from the bottom up as well, then a full waggon of readymix poured in to about a foot above ground level and marbled to where the paint starts. Eureka, dry walls at last. A drastic remedy, and not cheap to have done, but it is our home.

This is also a common problem in Eastern European countries around the Black Sea areas. The way they generally get around it it to apply ceramic tiles around the exterior of their homes to the bottom 2 feet of all walls. It appears to work very well.
