On February 10, 1941, the first (illegal) issue of the Amsterdam news paper Het Parool (= The word) was issued. It was the first 'underground' paper in Nazi occupied Holland, spreading the news picked up in Holland from the BBC. It was done on an old typewriter, by a fearless journalist ("Pieter 't Hoen"), the original was stencilled and went from hand to hand through the country after secret transportation in prams, bikes etc. The penalty for any involvement in this Nazi hated publication was death. Sadly many people were caught and shot in Zandvoort, Scheveningen and other places. After the Second World war I worked more than two decades for this news paper as a freelancer and later as a staff member. I'm far away from Amsterdam, but my thoughts are there when I type this. I'm proud to celebrate that "Het Parool" issued its 20.000th copy today!

For interested people (I hope!): IN ENGLISH: For background information on the illegal wartime newspaper Het Parool you can read the English language summary of the thesis of Madelon de Keizer: Het Parool 1940 - 1945: Verzetsblad in Oorlogstijd.

RE msg 5&6, No1Doyen: (...) Do you remember the first article that you wrote for "Het Parool"?

=> No, not really, though I remember my first article that was printed - in the no longer existing "De Tijd" (The Times) another Amsterdam based news paper. I think I was 18 at the time and someone who went on holidays asked me to replace him for three weeks. He had read my writings in the club magazine of the "Amsterdam Football, Baseball and Cricket Club". Later on I worked for the Dutch TV News, Dutch TROS radio and then "Het Nieuw Utrechts Dagblad" ("The New Utrecht Daily"), owned by "Het Parool", where I was "transferred" to later. We worked for both news papers: a long local story and a shortened version if the subject was worth it. But what was my first article there..? I really don't remember!

P.S. Do I get the job after this CV..?

In today's job market you would probably need to attend psychometric evaluation to get the job Hans.

Who owns the paper today and what is its circulation compared to equivalent publications?
