Chris (totally baffled) p.s. private number so can't phone it back. |

Don't worry about it nurseawful, I have had similiar experiences with my Northern Ireland accent and I wonder if those who speak with "marbles in their mouths" ( I am not mentioning where they may be from ! ) cannot understand what we are saying? Think of times when we have had to speak to someone at a call centre in Delhi and don't take it personally.

Deehacker, Come on she understood that she had the correct number and believe it or not I am probably easier to understand on the telephone as I tend to slow down! Plus most peoples accents can be quite pronounced no matter where they come from, if in doubt you can always say pardon and ask someone to repeat themselves! If she had to go to a Dr or nurse in the UK goodness knows what kind of accent she would be faced with! Chris

Nurseawful, I know what upset you. If you had a chance to say something before she hang up it would have been fine. It reminded me of this man living in the first social housing estate in Famagusta. It was about 2 a.m. and the telephone rang. He answered and the chap at the other end insulted him for staying up so late and hang up. He could not sleep until the morning because he did not have a chance to hit back. Its human anture. ismet

When I have a problem with accent, I will always explain to the caller that I am slightly deaf and could they speak slowly!!! this usually works, ......... Then no body feels insulted....

Simbas not sure as we have had a few odd calls over the last few months but normally they are very long winded and intense usually not about the caller them self but about a third party. maybe she just didn't like the sound of my voice who knows. DD I actually think it is funny now and can laugh but was initially annoyed, if you sounded a bit posher I might have thought it was you!!!!!!!!!!!! (just kidding) Chris

It reminds me of my return flight to Stanstead from the Newcastle. I had gone through security and was just entering duty free when a well dressed, well spoken gentleman stopped me to ask if I shop using a credit card. I just said "No", nothing more just a simple no (well, it was silly o clock in the morning). He then asked if I am British, to which I replied "Yes, but I live in north Cyprus". He came back with "Oh, I thought you looked foreign!" Figure that one out, it had me laughing for most of my journey home

When I joined the forces i constantly had people asking me to speak slower as thay could'nt understand a word I said ( Geordie type/ Sunderland lingo) when I returned to the Norhteast after a few years away the folks at home all said I sounded like a a posh talking southern git, you can't win. Now I'm just a loud mouthed garolous sexist pig the missus says, good to see I'm getting better with age. D.N

Be fair, - maybe the woman was like 'im downstairs! Accents throw him completely and utterly, plus he is deafr so the phone is even more impossible. Give the lady the benefit of the doubt! Maybe she is a female version of my beloved.
