Talat wanted to push on but was held back by the masses,

People sometimes complain on here when Cyprus issues are not mentioned but sport is.Maybe thats why a lot of people dont bother posting Cyprus issues anymore as there is either limited or no response,

I read the article in the link, but really do not have any comments on it other than it only confirms what some people have thought.....

I think both leaders always had very very little room for manoever

talat surely must have known just how intransigent the gc's are in the main

and judged by his own community's viewpoint christofias must not give away the "future",

however farfetched that "future" is: just see how weepy gc daytrippers get sometimes

a "peace deal" prescribed for an island at peace for 35 years, and waiting on tenterhooks

for the critical proposals these two strong men were always totally unable to deliver

has only existed in the rose-tinted and millenialist view of some of the more

idealistic of the guest community, and those who think cypriots would act as they "should"

we've been sold a pup!

Has there has been so little information released confirming any agreement to any of the critical issues in the 60 meetings held have thought parties were only going through motions for their own political agenda.

yeah, and my prediction for 2010?

"the talks will be suspended only but not terminated

while both the republic of " (south) "cyprus

and representatives of the turkish cypriots are pleased to

have reached complete agreement that all future disputes

and consultation will always be dealt with by negociation only"

I agree with Pilgrim, but there appears to be no info as to what was discussed; what has been agreeed; what cannot be agreed; and there is no info as to what Plan B will be, other than 'nothing'

Reading some of the comments in Cyprus Mail one can see how little chance there is of much changing, as the South seems to have forgotten that Turkey is one of the guarantor powers which actually did something while Greece and Britain stood by and did nothing.

And my question is this? I wonder how many of the GC's writing in such terms of hatred viz a vis tc'S WOULD be alive today., Chances are their parents would have been killed in the continuing 'battles' and they would not have been born!

this continual and continued hatred to all TC's means there is little chance of a peaceful united future. Shame.

What a waste of 16 months. Let's call a halt to these talks now.

Charalambpous is not very popular with his fellow countrymen! But let's wait and see if there couldbe a turn around. Of course, as long as Talat sticks it out, no one can point the finger at him, so it goes in favour of the north. If the GC's blot their own copy book, again that goes in our favour.

So, I reckon we need to back Talat and encourage him. It must be EXTREMELY difficult for him if he knows deep down that he is being '[mucked about'. He goes up in my estimation if he is having to stick at something that is just a game to the south, but which he has to carry on with for the sake of the future of TRNC.

Marie B,

i agree with your sentiments and your post as a whole.I really do feel sorry for Talat though as he is stuck between a rock and a hard place.Maybe it is now time for plan B,

Grey.

Andre,

As i understand it Turkey have a number of countries waiting in the wings who are willing to recognise trnc as a country. But only when the talks fail,

hi grey,

is there any practical difference between the talks "failing"

and the talks not having succeeded "yet"?

in other words the stalemate continues as er... a stalemate!

wiser heads than mine eg elko 2 believe there will be a taiwanisation,

a slow de facto recognition of reality on the ground, as it were

where plan B comes into its own is if turkey, mostly a regional power,

finds itself rejected both as a partner in compromise by the gc-south

and at the same time as a partner in the eu by christian europe

plan B is unlikely to be a finally detailed cut and dried programme

but may include a spectrum of measures such as building closer ties

with russia and iran, very awkward indeed for the west:

...and at the very extreme end the final annexation of north cyprus

just like in 1974, they would only do the latter if all else fails

and it is not a racing certainty, with many pluses and minuses

finally, whoever does what it will be mostly to suit themselves
