"The consensus in Cyprus seems to be that the smoking ban will be treated the same way as was the ban on using mobile phones while driving. It will be generally ignored by the police and will be flouted by not only government ministers but by the majority of smokers using restaurants and bars..."

Talk about 'jumping the gun'. How can anyone answer this question after only three days of it becoming law?.

The EU law now being re-enforced in south Cyprus and echoed in the north, is about smoking in public places.

If it is a 'Law' then it has to be obeyed - or am I missing the point here?

If the 'Law' states you have to do something then surely you have to do it!

Actually I don't think the smoking ban is being enforced in the south yet believe it will be round about the 16th if memory serves me well.

No doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong.

They closed the smoking area in McDonalds at Orphanides Mall, back in 2008. After about 3 weeks they re-introduced it. I think banning smoking there must have affected trade?

At the other McDonalds near the big Alphamega, McDonalds is deffo non-smoking inside. They do have an outside area at that location though.

I suspect that in the South, the effect on trade of a smoking ban, will mean bending the rules to a degree.

This is just my view & based on what I've seen happen in the South to date.

Saw a good one other day.

Open a window, put ash tray on ledge in case the thought police turn up and carry on smoking.

As a stong advocate of no smoking I just think the way the laws have been introduced world wide is crazy. I am sure that soon a smart individual with the backing of a baccy company will take on a government on breach of civil liberites. I for one would support them.

Well, we've been to a couple of bars over the last couples of days and all have been enforcing the 'smoking ban'... I have to say it was really nice to be out and not ending up with blood shot, stinging eyes and then getting home, not having my hair and clothes all stinking of smoke!! Sorry all those smokers out there but... long may it last!!!

You'd need to explain that one D. You've lost me there??

Why would you support someone taking on a Government on breach of civil liberties if you are an advocate of no smoking? I'd have thought you would support a ban.

I'm a smoker, but I do understand how non-smokers feel on this issue. I'm sure any Government who introduced a sensible law as opposed to an OTT blanket ban would be far more successful & would hopefully carry rational people of both groups with them. No law, of any description, will ever deal with the extremists in either group. I do accept that there are a few very selfish smokers out there, as there are also similar non - smokers (actually mostly ex smokers).

I can remember when they banned smoking on the London Underground. Suddenly instead of the smell of smoke, it was all BO, particularly in the summer. Maybe I'm biased, but I prefer the smell of cigarettes to people's body odours. I also have suffered with the stinging eyes bit. It's caused by lack of ventilation here, because restaurants are poorly heated.

The ban on smoking in restaurants here, will bring about an increase in your clothes smelling like a chip pan or Kebab. It's bad enough already in some restaurants here where the kitchens are open to the restaurant. Surely people have come across this problem? It's a bit like being tied down for hours in a Fish & Chip shop or Transport Cafe.

exnavalperson, the thing about laws is that you can tell from day 1 whether they are being followed and it looks like they aren't. The complaint in the UK is that since the smoking ban was introduced pubs stink of beer!

I have noticed recently in the TRNC an increased number of smokers (this includes staff) standing outside various eating and drinking establishments having a drag !!

With that observation in mind, I can only assume that the more outside smoking the less inside!!

Personally I welcome it if only to encourage more to give it up or at least cut down and give us non smokers a break.

Scruff, You need to explain that one !!!!! you have lost me there !!!!can you please explain how a non smoker or ex smoker can be selfish with reference to smoking ban in a public place ???

Scruff,

Smoking is an awful bad habit that is sometimes a real pain in the *** for others. However smokers still have some rights and to me they are being treated as fourth class citezens by the PC brigade

Scruff......you prefer BO to cigarette smoke?????????? That begs various questions. There is a problem with cigarette smoke however.......it actually kills you,and if in confined areas, it kills other people too ! I had a friend who died of lung cancer only 2 years ago. He never smoked..........but his widow does!

a few years ago when my daughter was in hospital I was talking to a guy in a wheelchair, he had throat cancer and told me he didn't have long left. He lit a cigarette and the smoke came out of the hole in his throat where his tube was!! I have never smoked, but I have never forgotten this, it made me feel sick!! xx

If you are eating in a bar\restrarant and someone starts smoking then complain to the owner\manager. If they shrug their shoulders then you should then walk out without paying. If they threaten to call the police then call their bluff and wait for them to arrive and explain why you are not paying the bill.

They will soon play by the rules.

As Clarets said, smelling of food or 'suffering' the smell of BO, I would suggest, is preferable to inhaling other people's second hand smoke and then, not only having to smell of it for the rest of the night/ day, but to have to then risk the long term problems it can cause...?

I must say, I'm not particularly partial to the smell of BO myself Scruff, but I am fairly confident that it won't kill me...!? ;)

Cypusishome says that smokers are being treated as forth class citizens but what have non - smokers been treated like in the past. I recently went to a carol service evening in a local restaurant and joined in the singing and left at the end of the evening stinking of cigarette smoke .......................now I won`t have too. Long may the ban continue.

Cant stand the smell of stale cig smoke, clothes and hair smell, usually smokers start to cough and splutter, then they think we are the horrible ones for wanting them take their habit outside!!

As I shall be doing as others on this forum, start smoking inside, and I will walk out and not pay for the food.

Its time we all stood our ground for our healths sake and others.......

msg 23

Beware, I know someone who done that two days before Christmas, he and his wife were arrested and charged with theft and are currently waiting to go to court even though they have offered to pay the bill, the worst part of this is he is an officer in the services and is currently in a lot of trouble over taking the stand he took........he may loose his career only a few years away from pension too.

Nice idea though....if you could get away with it.

All I will say as regards to tobacco smoke & inhaling the fumes as a non-smoker is to mention the effect of benzene when you fill up your cars with petrol. Benzene is a carcingen too.

Diesel fumes on a major city street aren't too clever either.

Would you non smokers support banning the internal combustion engine too? Please don't tell me that there isn't a connection. None of you would give up your cars, despite their harmful effects on your health & every one elses. How would you feel if the Government said that you could no longer own a car?

I salute all you brave people who are going to order/consume a meal in a restaurant then walk out without paying for it. I envisage a night in what passes as cells followed closely by the maximum fine. Probably the most costly meal you ever had!
