It was snowing hard on the Isle of Wight earlier, its now set to freeze. All transportation is down, abandoned cars, buses just parked up at the side of the road. Very worried about Strongbow supplies not getting through.

Update.

Just realised I'm not a Moderator anymore with no editing powers. It must be a stage you go through on this forum like adolesence or finding you have to start to shave.

Phew! Thought I was in a bit of trouble there for a bit, having to be responsible and that, things back to normal now, survived that one, another bonus for 2010. Happy Days.

It has been a good day in Bavaria, I didn't have to clear the snow today. Just thought you would like to know that!

But watch this space, it is only 6 January!

Just saw on the BBC news Birmingham, Manchester and Gatwick airports closed this morning and a few small ones like Inverness.

Watching it on TV it looks very picture postcard but I suspect if I was there I wouldn't think that way.

Lovely sunny morning here in Lapta.

Stay warm everyone it won't be long until summer.

Forest Of Dean Gloucestershire - snow stopped at present - wonderful photo ops - about 20cm deep and I still got to work! (How long till the power or phone lines go down? Then no IAH as we don't have a generator.)

Navek - I hope so it is walk able even though the snow is deepish but nice and crunchy.

Even if I do have an old 4*4 I would not use it unless there was an emergency.

I think it is the only car in the UK that has a spare back wheel that says it sells North Cyprus and Turkey!

Clive Happy New Year - You are back UK side are you not?

I was talking to someone in Newnham Bottom and they are not expecting power cuts yet! It depends on which pole or cable has too many icicles if it is Woodside or them that goes down first.

Snowing in the Isle of Man - we hardly ever have snow here. It started yesterday morning all schools have been closed for two days and chaos reigns. We only have a few inches in most villages but up on Snaefell Mountain there is a lot of snow. There are webcams up there, giving lovely views.

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire - 23cms+ since yesterday. Can't see car on driveway - just a round white blob! Bitterly cold and very little traffic in rural area where I'm at. Trying to keep garden birds fed as they can't hop around much to forage. Gather the snow will leave this area soon after lunchtime and head further south and east. Anyone remember the REAL big freeze of '62/63? Now that really was something to write about! Nearly 3 months of deep snow drifts & icy conditions. Nowadays we're just too soft, complacent, and badly managed to cope with extremes of any kind.

In Stoke-on-Trent it has snowed but we seem to have got off lighter than others.Schools closed ,traffic jams every where but this is because it is quite hilly around here and even a little snow creates havoc. Its ok on t6he main roads ,its when when you go onto the side roads and housing estates when you run into trouble.I know grit is in short supply but a run round with the snow plough would certainly help, stops it all compacting every time it snows, then the rock salt is useless...

It looks like it is in Alsancak. I've taken my tree down, which has fake snow on it, and the place is covered in the stuff. I think there's been an avalanche in the hall. Dear me LOTS of cleaning and dusting needed.

Just had one short fall of snow in Airdrie this morning but lots of snow before that so about 8" lying with ice underneath, the good news is the Scotish Government has brought a temporary suspension of the shooting of birds due to the severe weather. Hope the ducks etc enjoy it as it ends on the 18th January. -20 in Scotland forecast for tonight.

I loved the Daily Telegraph Matt cartoon this morning. Two ladies talking in the snow over the fence, one saying 'my husband's too mean to turn up the heating, he just grits the hallway.'

I made an executive decision and sent everyone home from work this afternoon. The snow has been heavy around Bury St Edmunds and as a few of the people I work with live out in the sticks I thought I'd better send them home or they may have had to stay the night with Jean & I.

Yep I can remember 63, snow still around field edges until end May. I can remember crying with the cold as had no water for animals, ( my dads cows) and we had to walk to a stream over drifts 6ft high, to then make a track for the cows to follow in by shovel at least half mile!! Terrible, horrible, time.. No milk collected, no food delivered in for ages. Winter rations for cattle was shared out to neighbours who had run out of food for their cattle. No, that was a bad year....

No snow falling in Pickmere, Cheshire today, but it sure did yesterday....about 6-7inches enough to make travelling down the lanes impossible. Braved the snowy/icy conditions today and drove to work in Congleton....beautiful clear night sky now back in Pickmere, already -4%. In front of the fire toinight for sure. Will see what tomorrow brings. Stay safe everyone.

Travelling to work this morning north on the M1 from Leicester all the matrix signs were listing lots of road closures up north. Must be grim up there as the snow has been sustained I beleive.

It was chaos here today on the Isle of Wight. Last night we went out down Binstead Hill to the Fleming Arms which was the refuge for stranded bus passengers trying to get back to Newport.

Today Binstead Hill was still difficult, both pictures taken by my girlfriend, Chris.

I had to walk to work this morning, no buses, went to rail station no trains, so ended up walking from Westgate to Margate, Kent. Usually takes 40 mins in summer but today took me hour and 50mins. 2 accidents on the way to Canterbury preventing buses going there and bus depot at Broadstairs could not get buses out due to ice. Left work at 2.30pm and it started snowing again at 4.00pm but its the old ice underneath that is treacherous. I really don't know how all those people manage in Scotland etc ours is minor compared to there but all falls apart very quickly here.

Paul(mess.63) I hope you find something soon, keep looking at the website, Sylvie.

Drove to work this morning from Pickmere to Congleton, leaving home it was minus 18.......never experienced such cold before! Weather forecasts show more cold and snow to come over the next few days. Murat our friend arrived back in TRNC yesterday, lucky to have flown from Stansted, just spoken to him, 20 degrees, sunny and warm and sitting outside today....roll on April when we are next there.

Stay safe everyone.

More snow forcast for later today and all weekend here in Cheshire. -13c at the moment.

Snows not the problem. Its the ice thats causing a major headache. 4inches deep on some roads and patchy like pot-holes in the road. Think your ok then wham you skid.

M6 and all major roads clear but loads of wagons going to the salt mines in Middlewich so thats causing more problems.

Why do we have all the panic when other countries cope?

Boglefan: Somne iffy weather conditions forecast for Sunday, anywhere in UK. Suggest your son keeps in close contact with the airline throughout. Currently, Bristol is operating but with some delays on outbounds.

We have had snow on snow and ice since before Christmas and it has not thawed

-13 at times according to son's car barometer. -22 lowest last night in Altnaharra

Lovely sunny days though and have been out walking to shops/drs. etc. and had to

bus into city yesterday - no problem except bus had flat tyre. They finally gritted the

pavements as so many were complaining how dangerous it is trying to walk on them.

Well, took a day's leave today. Too nervous to drive and Paul (usually an excellent driver) is paranoid. He's walking to work).

We have worse to come over the weekend, apparently.

Jean, Paul has the right idea it is really not worth it if you can walk or get by whatever public transport is operating. Had to go out in the car today took me longer to clear the ice from the inside of the car as it did for the outside. The roof of the car still has snow from before Christmas plus what has fallen since so about 9-10" in the middle. Tonight was the first time there have been gritters since the 4th January so even the main roads aren't too good here. We are due more snow here over the next few days as well. Just dreading the gas bill but under no circumstances will the heating be turned off, even turning it down at night the kitchen water pipes are frozen in the morning . Hope the bank manager likes me enough to give me the bank loan for the gas and electric bills. The good news is I feel guilt free having a hot toddy before bed. Keep safe, warm and well.

Irene, message 96.

I know exactly what you mean. Paul is fortunate in that he can walk to work from where we live, but I am certainly not risking life and limb to get to where I work. Unfortunately, gritters, etc. have been a bit thin on the ground (pardon the pun). Like you, I am dreading the gas/electric bills, but no way can I be cold. Still, he managed to get to Sainsbury's today and has stocked up on brandy. Purely medicinal, of course, to keep out the cold

PS Why do people struggle through this sort of weather, against all advice, to get to work? Good grief, some are putting their lives at risk - is it worth it? I think not.

Jean, got up this morning and we have a mild blizzard(if there is such a thing) its snowing but very windy. As I said earlier, I walked to work but its hard work walking avoiding the icy pavements but have improved on my snowboarding skills!!!!!! Enjoy your brandy.

European blizzards due to hit most of SE England today and continuing towards central and SW areas through Sunday. Snow will freeze on top of snow & ice already in place so expect temps to plummet even further, especially with the strong NE winds blowing the snow in from the Continent. Don't forget to keep PIPES LAGGED in loft areas and under sink cupboards where stop valves are usually located. Burst pipes are going to happen everywhere once the temps. rise again. What jolly thoughts! You're a lucky lot out there in TRNC and having just read about that beautiful sunset a short while ago, am quite envious of your ice-free existence!
