A suspected supernova, unofficially named as 'The death star' is in imminent explosion in an outer galaxy. The star could explode with a capacity of '20 billion billion billion megatons of TNT'. This star is sucking in gases from outer space that are steadily building up inside the star to cause it to explode. Although it is situated approximately 3260 light years away, this is 'a short hop' in galactic terms. The next blast is 20 years overdue, causing much more pressure inside the star, leaving astrology experts to believe it will be powerful enough to strip off our ozone layer, causing radiation on earth, which will frazzle life on earth. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2795981/Supernova-may-wipe-out-the-Earth.html

Given that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, do we need to worry about something which, if it happened tomorrow, would take 3260 years to get here?

That telescope picture is an old one that they showed of the star previously. Therefore it could have exploded already.. we await impact.

It is also possible that the blast produce from the star could get sucked into a wormhole which would in turn make it travel in time and be at the destination faster than light. Though this is thought to be a myth, some think wormholes do exist.

IF wormholes do exist, we have found no evidence that they exist in our solar system, or even our galaxy. But we are not close enough in light-years to be sucked in.

Thank christ for that. I had visions of this great big open space sucking us all in. There's so much I want to do before I go!

the ancient Mayans predicted the end of the earth in winter 2012! this is when their long count calendar will end. They also predicted the two world wars and 9/11 when "great birds will come from the sky and end a great city"!!!!!!!!!! x

The mayans said the 4th cycle of life would end in 2012... but at the end of that cycle, starts a 5th cycle, with a new dawn for mankind. They NEVER said it would be doomsday for the world, it is only the end of a calender. A new age interpretation of this transition said that, during this time, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. (not the end of the world)...

Mayan people are not extinct. An entire culture doesnt vanish. The mayans predicted the new eras of the planet, which they too would have suffered. But to answer your question, mayan people still live today, whether in South Africa or Austrailia, the mayans have moved with the times, and gradually became less in numbers. They moved with the times just the same as christian people, hindus etc etc.

Exactly No1Doyen, this is what people are saying. It is ONLY the end of a calender, and that happens once a year. Maybe the Mayans ran out of space in the place they carved the calender or maybe they got bored of doing it. The fact always stands that just because its the end of a calender it doesnt mean its the end of the world. It could either mean the start of a new era, or nothing at all.

What a load of old tosh, every one should live for today! No one can predict the future of the ending of the earth. Its been happening since time began, it will run its course like every thing else......

Light, speed, time space. These are just words we have invented and concepts our brains understand. To believe that the Universe runs to our intellect and understanding is naive and arrogant. We have no idea about how fast things can travel and what the Universe is. We pretend to know so much and to have the answers. When 2012 is long gone and if we are still around in 3012, the so called science facts will be completely different to now and they will still be way off the mark. It is unfathomable and if there are some finite truths I doubt if we'll ever reach them. Music, dreams and love give us a hint..perhaps.

Corbo your right, we no hardly anything about the universe as it stands, but alot of what we do know makes alot of sense. Einsteins theory on light speed, makes sense and through all the years of experiments, they have only ever hardended Einsteins theory and never proved it was inaccurate. We will live past 2012 i have no doubt about that as i was saying previously its just the end of a calender, which by the way the Mayans calender ends at 21/12/12, which would tell us that we will begin a new era and this period of 9-10 days between then and the new year we will see it first hand. Scientists have worked on the speed of light for many years, and only ever have they managed to reach 99.7% of 1 light year when working. So we do have no clue about how fast light actually travels, but we have an estimate and that works.

I'm sure you're right mrcyprus about our current understanding of light speed. However, there will (probably) be ways found of achieving a 'faster' speed. Folding space, worm holes. I have no idea but something will come up over time that will show the way. Yes; I'm a Star Trek fan.

yes Corbo i did mention wormholes earlier. Although we do not no for sure if they exist of not, wormholes is one way we can achieve speed faster than light, 'time travel'. It is like folding space as you said. Both sides of the wormholes behind folded to form on top of the other so when entered you would come out the other side at a different time. If you have ever heard of the Twin Paradox it explains it excellently. An example i learnt some time ago... A rocket leaves earth with a crew member ages 36, headed for the nearest star outside our solar system. (about 10 earth years away).. and his twin brother works at mission control, aged 36 obviously. Now, because the rocket will skip time frames (assuming it went at speed of light) the journey the astronaut was on took 5 years.. Therefore the astronaut has aged only 5 years and is now 41 but his brother who has remained in 1 time frame has aged 10 years, he is now 46... but they are twins....

Its all explained in Einsteins special relativity that says things moving faster than the speed of light in turn are slowed down by the process on earth. The clock onboard the rocket says he has been up for 5 years, yet the clock in mission control stands at 10 years.
