Similar to Malaria, last September my husband and a couple of our friends had it. On their return to England, the doctor thought it was Malaria and had all the blood test done, but turned out to be this sand fly fever - not very pleasant. It lasted for for 8 weeks, but the worse of it for about 2 weeks. High fever, sickness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, very week and tried. But they do say, if you have had it you don't get it again!!

Yes I have had it, severe flu like syptoms with high fever and cold shivers/ sweats with aches and pains.

I went to girne hospital was give an immediates injection to reduce the fever and a prescription for vitamins , and 2 other lots of pills one to reduce fever not sure about the other.

To recover from all symptoms took me 2 weeks if you do not go to hospital and fail to treat quickly the symptoms can last p to 6 weeks !!

Symptoms can differ but generally flu-like with severe aches and pains and you probably will be unable to get out of bed. I had a terrible headache for about 4 days but luckily no diarrhoea. My husband had very bad back ache. We were both treated (on separate occasions) on a drip over 2 days then a further week to recover fully. We had already had symptoms for at least a week before the drip and I think if you seek help early enough it can be treated with antibiotic injection and vitamins. It is really nasty so if in any doubt go and see a doctor.

Unfortunately, I know people who have had it more than once.

To try to answer Berty,

We do not live in Esentepe but these critters operate right across the country through most of the summer.

They are so small that you do not usually see them until they bite, and unlike mossies you feel them nip.

Best thing is ensure you cover up and use a propriatary repellant. Does not work but gives peace of mind!!!!!!

As has already been emphasised, any sign of flu type symptoms get to doctor asap.

Hi

Prevention - wish I could find the last time this subject had an outing; someone had a marvellous method of zapping them in the microwave - sounded like great fun. More boring but seems to work. A garlic capsule and a Vitamin B1 daily, and Avon Skin so Soft Dry Oil Spray (the blue one) - Armed Forces been using it for years. There's an Avon Rep somewhere. And locally available Autan Active (yellow spray bottle, pink lid) seems to work. And those plug-in mozzie things for night-time.

Best of luck!

Regards

Jo

hi all with regard to the sand fly"s,as most of the people who reply to these posts on the forum, seem to be ex/pats or holiday makers, perhaps someone

from the turkish cypriot community could inform us to how they deal with the

problem, as they must have lived with this for generations and local, knowledge

may be invaliable.

thanks.

I did use the Avon skin so soft but I got three bites still on my legs! Perhaps I didnt put enough on maybe - it was lovely stuff though and smelt nice.
