Taken from the Cypus Mail

78% of GC's felt positive about Christofias's Leadership

41% of GC's are happy or very happy with his dealing of the Cypus problem, 26% say mediocre handling, 20% unhappy or very unhappy

65% of GC's want a unified Cypus with co-leadership, 28% want a two state solution

Suggests he needs to work hard to convince GC's that a two party solution is the way forward, but he may have the leadership poularity to pull it off

Christofias tops poll

By Jacqueline Theodoulou

PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias has topped the popularity polls, with the majority of the public saying they felt ‘positive’ about the new government.

The polls, made public yesterday, showed that 78 per cent of Cypriots felt positive about Christofias’ first few months in presidency.

Leading party AKEL yesterday expressed its satisfaction at the outcome, with party spokesman Andros Kyprianou saying it was indicative of the new President’s policies in the Cyprus problem but also internal affairs.

But he added that there was still a lot of hard work to be done in order to maintain the public’s positive opinion.

“We have made promises to the people and we will try to keep these promises for the duration of the five years to prove that we truly are a different government,” said Kyprianou.

AKEL deputy Nicos Katsourides, who was yesterday asked to comment on the fact that 28 per cent of the public supported a two-state solution to the Cyprus problem, said this was worrying but added that in last year’s polls, this percentage was higher.

“We need to fight this wrong impression, which some of our fellow Cypriots have that the two-state solution is a viable solution,” said Katsourides.

DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades also expressed his satisfaction over the opposition’s standing of 53.3 per cent in the poll. He said it showed DISY exercised its opposition duties responsibly, consistently and with credibility.

Anastassiades said the polls showed a tendency to accept, on the one hand Demetris Christofias’ leadership, and on the other the responsible stance of the official opposition.

78 per cent of those asked evaluated the first few months of Christofias’ government as positive, in the Cyprus problem but also internal issues.

According to a survey by CMR CYPRONETWORK, 40 per cent of those asked were very positive about the new president, 38 per cent positive, 13 per cent mediocre and six per cent were negative or very negative.

In regards to his handling of the Cyprus problem, 41 per cent of the interviewees viewed latest developments as ‘positive’ or ‘very positive’, 26 per cent mediocre and 20 per cent ‘negative’ or ‘very negative’.

Regarding the general policy of the government, 53 per cent of those asked said they felt positive about it, while just seven per cent were not impressed.

A poll by research and consultancy firm Metron Analysis showed that the level of satisfaction for the new government reached 59.1 per cent and the level of satisfaction for the opposition reached 53.3 per cent.

The solution of a unified Cyprus with the co-leadership of the two communities is preferred by Cyprus society, with 65.4 per cent of those asked opting for it and 28 per cent preferring a two-state solution

The view that Demetris Christofias was the last chance for a solution to the Cyprus problem was supported by 53.4 per cent.

Regarding the popularity of political figures, Christofias came first with 87.6 per cent, House President Marios Garoyian came second with 62.2 per cent and Anastassiades followed with 56.8 per cent.
