Jonathan Ross has announced he is leaving the BBC, after 13 years working for the corporation.

Ross, 49, who is one of the BBC's highest paid stars, said in a statement he had decided not to renegotiate his contract when it ends in July.

The presenter added his decision to leave was not "financially motivated".

In 2008, the controversial host was suspended for making a series of phone calls to actor Andrew Sachs on Russell Brand's Radio 2 show.

I heard a huge cheer go up this morning, sounded like it was coming from all over the country, then I saw the news that Ross was quitting the BBC and realised what the cheering was about.

Like his radio show, him and his producer work well together....Have stopped watching his tv show. makes me cringe the way he grovels to his guests. not got a lot of talent in my opinion, just happened to be his turn on the merry-go-round.

Like him or not you can't blame Jonathan Ross for the money he's earning. You have to blame the BBC. Too many so called stars are lambasted over their earnings, but surely it's the companies that fork out their salaries who's to blame. Look at the state of the Premier League. Are our prima Donna footballers worth their salaries?

I agree. It's our licence fees that enables the Beeb to pay them huge salaries.

I was one of those who cheered this morning.

Good riddance, in my opinion. Stopped watching the TV show ages ago and stopped listening to the Saturday morning radio show some while ago.

At least I'll be able to watch the TV programme about new films again.

Sheila - I, too USED to like him. Over the past few years he has become unbearable. You have missed nothing by not being able to watch his shows.

PS The man's a pillock who started to think he was above everything/everyone. I must say, though, I think his over-inflated ego was something to do with the obscene salary paid to him by the BBC.

Loves himself too much and is far too smutty when presenting his Friday Night TV show. Never bothered with his radio show. He gabbles incoherently and suggestively (eyes widening, tossing back his forelock and smirky leer with female guests) and the Beeb grossly overpaid the man. He'll end up hosting some radio/tv show where his puerile brand of smutty humour and gibbering will be understood/appreciated by like-minded sycophants. You've guessed it - can't stand his style of TV show hosting.

Swannee. I agree with you about Woss's smutiness. Totally unnecessary. Another 'Smut' merchant Is Graham Norton - can't stand the guy.

Woss amd Brand should have been sacked IMMEDIATELY at the point they made obscene phone calls. Who the hell allows these premadonas to get away with things that we would be hauled over the coals for.

Norton sticks his sexuality down peoples throats and uses members of the public/ audience to help him.

Get rid of anyone in their system who thinks they are above us, the licence/salary payers.

Must agree about Ross's smuttiness, particularly on his Friday TV show.

Last time I watched it (a long while ago now) he had David Bowie (hardly a shrinking violet himself) as a guest. After grovelling to Bowie to the extent of making you cringe, he launched into his usual mode (smut) and even Bowie commented on the fact that Ross did not appear to be able to talk about anything without bringing it down to such a level.

Jonothan Ross has he's own production Company. Now he is out of contract he can sell them to whom he wishes.

I bet the BBC spends even more on him but in smaller amounts. That way it will look more acceptable.

He will sell his programmes on to the American market. He is very popular. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.

A very shrewd operator.

Michael Parkinson? pffffffffffffffffffft!!!!!!!!

At least JR can raise a smile now and then - Parkinson never seemed to say anything more than "I mean...." "I mean........." an utter pompous bore, who always seemed to have more to say than his guests and his remarks when Jade Goody was still warm in her grave, were unconscionable......... If you don't like Ross or Norton, don't watch!!!!!! It makes me spit when we are forced to see hours of sport that a minority watch, losing programmes we were waiting to see, to do so. Of course they are all overpaid, but as has been said, that is the fault of the BBC. I do believe Brand (what a REPULSIVE excuse for a male) and Ross should have paid a higher price for their puerile unspeakable remarks, even though seemingly the female in question is no shrinking violet - it was beneath contempt............

It appears these days that you are not considered a good presenter unless you come out with loads of smut and you are not a good comedian unless you swear every other word.

Decent comedy shows are the likes of Only fools & Horses, Morecombe and Wise, Fawlty Towers etc etc

lovingcyprus. mess 40. They are three of the funniest comedy programmes ever shown on TV. With no swearing and no 'smuttiness'
