Our newborn SOS triplets need urgent eye surgery, 2 of them need both eyes operated on and now there are also fears that the 3rd will also need surgery. The family are having to go to Turkey every month for check ups which is proving very expensive. All the airlines have been contacted to see if they will offer reduced price tickets but we need to raise some serious money to cover the operation costs.

Any ideas Please

Tom they have been quoted 1000 euro each eye so at least 4000 Euro, they are going back to Turkey on the 13th to see the eye surgeon again and he will then check the 3rd triplet so the costs could go up to 6000 Euro.

Sienna - if you look at the list of active members I am sure it is far fewer.

Many of those might be duplicates so maybe if each member gave £4.00 that might well be a good amount.

sienna,

I think the reason Teresa is asking for ideas is because the quizes, bingo and other such are done to death. There is probably one or other every night of the week. The ones we used to go to were for charity but gradually the numbers have fallen off due to overkill.

So it is new ideas. Last summer there was a raft race where the teams made their own raft and competed around acourse off Lapta. Great fun was had by all.

However it is a bit cold for that so how about the old student faithfull, the bed push or failing that wheel chair race.

Maybe, until the weather improves and an outdoor fundraiser can be arranged, perhaps just an old fashioned collection box at certain locations, like the drop off arrangements with the toys?

Maybe one of the markets can donate a free stall and perhaps have a bring and buy stall? Homemade cakes, unwanted bric-a-brac etc? Botanica have a large frontage and we are open 7 days a week, so maybe a stall could be set up there? Once a fortnight or whatever?

Just had another idea....why dont you approach the people that hold the markets and ask if you can charge an entry fee of say 0.50tl or even 1tl, just as a one off, i am sure you would raise quite a bit of money.

Isn';t there any cheaper option? The reason I ask is because a baby born into the village here had eye problems. Iknow the family haven't got much money, but had the child treated in Turkey. I don't know much about the system in Turkey, but surely the poor don't have to find that kind of money. I am assuming these babies are of Turkish origin rather than Turkish Cypriot. It seems a heck of a lot of money to me.

I swould have thought that U.K might have been cheaper privately??????

As to raising money - yes, everything has been done to death. Just baout every charity has a stall at the markets now, and the quizzes and everything else done to death.

bUT ISN'T THERE A MEDICAL SPECIALIST SOMEWHERE WHO WOULD HELP WITH REDUCED FEES OR DO IT FOF FREE OUT OF LOVE?

Here's an idea. Don't know how viable this might be, but it may be worth a try (desperate times call for desperate measures). How about approaching Moorfields Eye Hospital in London? I think we all know that it's probably the best eye hospital in the world. I have read in the past that they do ops for all sorts of people who are not the most fortunate in the world (particularly children). Does anyone think it's worth a try?

Just get some volunteers out there with a bucket. I think people rarely refuse if its genuine.

There were some ladies at the Wednesday Girne market a few weeks ago, collecting for some students who needed financing to finish their courses at uni. Everyone put their hand in their pocket.

Jeannie

I think you have hit the nail on the head, approaching a UK hospital not only helps the babies but gives the hospital great publicity. Probably better to try and get some of the UK newspapers on side first with the story and let it evolve from there!

Thankyou so much for all the ideas, i will keep them all in mind and when the time comes i will start shouting.

The moorfields idea is a good one but as the babies are already under a hospital in Turkey i am not sure how they would feel about going to UK and seeing drs that dont speak their language but i will put the idea to Nuket and see what she says so if you could speak to your relation No1 that would be good.

When the family go to Turkey on the 13th they will bring back detailed reports so we will have a much better idea.

If anyone wants to donate nappies or baby milk then by all means please drop them off to me at the bridal shop.

I used to run a UK lottery when I lived in Germany. You get 49 people and charge say €2 per number. Assuming you sell all the numbers (I used to do it on a 2 monthly basis so that I did not have to collect money all the time) then you have raised €90 x 8 = €720. Give €40 or 50 as the weekly prize then the balance is for the charity. It worked really well and you can raise some serious money if you can get the initial people. The winner is the person who has the number that corresponds with the UK (Main) Lottery Bonus Ball. If you do not sell all the numbers then its proportionate and if the winning number is not sold for any week then you can either give all the money to charity for that week or make it a roll over. Worth a try perhaps?

We have everybody bringing their old books in and then they put a donation in charity box to take any home. have raised over £5000 in 3 years. maybe not a quick fix but will help in long term and doesn't cost anybody anything because they have got something for their money!

Why doesn't someone contact one of the nappy companies or formula milk companies, surely they will donate for a few photos of the triplets now or at a later stage using or wearing their products.

There must be loads of different companies supplying baby products to the TRNC. If they were all contacted, by ltter or phone surely some sort of deal could be thrashed out.

Just had another thought, what about contacting one of the woman or baby magazines,? Will they pay for a few pictures and the story? Surely the fact that they are triplets possibly all needing the same operation must be of interest?

Is there a 'triplets group/organisation' in the UK or somewhere else that might want to get behind it and give some support?

Another way to raise money would be to have an Auction, perhaps at the Lambousa, every one usually has something that could be donated and I am sure if you speak with Gordon the owner maybe he would allow the use for a fee..... Even bottles of whisky, Gin, any thing.....

What about a "slave for the day" quction - macho men - a bit of odd-jobbing here and there? Ladies - ironing for the day? Me? I am a pretty good cook and would auction myself to cook for a three course dinner party - and wash up after? What do you think?

Lucienne

Yes there is its called the 'Twins and Multiple Births Association' Tamba for short, I used to be a member some years ago!!! Here is a link to there website: http://www.tamba.org.uk/Page.aspx?pid=195

In some countries you get help with 3 or more babies in the UK you dont, but some parts of Europe do give extra help and extra finance, might be worth looking into.

My husband was a DJ and compare for 30 years and has organised lots of charity functions for various good causes, Why not let him try and orgaganise a caberet night with singers and a comedian, I am sure you will be able to find a venue for free as they are screaming out for business.

As Teresa says, it's early and we will have more information when the children return from their visit to hospital.

There have been some fantastic ideas and I am sure that we will start fundraising shortly. In the meantime we can all think of possible large donors who might be able to resolve this at a stroke. Corporate Donors.

Today I have sent emails to possible celebrity donors. Celebrities with some conection with Cyprus.

David Haye, Yusuf Islam aka Cat Steven, Jordan, George Michael, 6 Dot Foundation for the Blind of Turkey, Pancyprus for the blind of Cyprus.....

Think "out of the box" as to who you know. It might just help

Like i said earlier thankyou all so much for the ideas, and some great ones, Botanica i am up for a slave auction and Jane brilliant idea if your husband is able to get some acts together i am sure we could get a venue no problem.

Mr Vince Thankyou for taking the time to do this, i know the family are so grateful for all the support they are getting but the op is the big one and of course all the aftercare that goes with it.

I loved holding them all at once but the thought of looking after them 24/7 scares the life out of me.

I'm afraid this is all to much (again) for one woman, i.e. Teresa. Why not make an expat committee soonest, check the ideas and decide which ones are best to find the money needed? And work the ideas out together. Yes, of course, I volunteer for such a committee and offer to do the communication/PR.
