Clayton - Well said. There's a tad more to tourism than getting the punters here

Well we should be ok then if this comes off. I notice the hotels mentioned all have casinos so I would doubt they would leave them. Also I beleive theu are being offerd full board. We have been in contact with the tour operators who verified this fact. We do not hold our breath. ItaLIANS by nature do not travel. They border so many wonderful countries, and of course they live in one of the most beautiful. They al have camper vans and travel within thier own country. It would be lovely to see more nationalities here xxx

There will be flights by CTA to Milan, Rome, Verona and Bologna during the summer tobring in thesetourists.

All I know is that my experience of talians on the roam in Cyprus, whether north or south seem to use one word 'sporca' (dirty), so if they do venture outside the warmth and comfort zone of the hotel, it might be an idea for the plACe to be tidied up, so they can spread the word that Cyprus is a good place to come.

Otherwise, it won't happen next year.

The spin off from this is that we will all be able to get trips to Italy easier by virtue ofd these flights being put on. IU believe CTA have done a deal.

So, we could all benefit with the extra tourists and extra flight opportunioties.

Grey - thanks for the clips. Must admit, if I were ever to go through Venice on a gondola, don't think I'd be able to resist it.

Liz - I know what you mean about the beautiful scenery easily available for the Italian people to visit. In fact, I've never been to the Amalfi coast, but would dearly love to visit.

Just a response, firstly to Jeannie - yes, you can tell the Italians from their clothes, just as you can spot a British tourist a mile away.

And sorry to disagree with Lilli, but I met the Italian love of my life in Limmassol who said 'invechiamo insiemme' and I ended up living in a Nunnery. So they do travel, but the consequences can be dire!

I wonder if they want any tour guides (apart from Guido) - mi piacerebbe farlo!

I am reminded of a holiday, many years ago, on Corfu. Now, Corfu is very popular with Italians, as the transit is easy - Brindisi - Corfu.

Now, those of us who have visited the Greek Islands would probably agree that the standard of driving is not the best. We were going out for a meal one evening, in a taxi, and the very friendly driver, spent the entire duration of the journey moaning about the Italian drivers. Have to admit, he had a point

MarieB - I went out with a very good looking Italian when I was in my 20's. Didn't last - can't think why - but it was lovely whilst it lasted

Jeannie - maybe it was a touch of the M.C.P. which lurks in the make up of many Italians (not Guido, of course)!!!!!!

But they do everything with such charm that they can be forgiven (in the short term).

And to Lilli, I am damned grateful that I didn't grow older with Paolo - but the experienced aged me! He also forgot to carry out his word, including getting a divorce!

But, like Jeannie, it was an experience, but I was older than 20 and should have known better. But I have remained friends with many I met over there, and hope to meet up with some of them this year. So, maybe the invitation from the brown eyed, brown voiced huomo italiano was not such a total loss. It also meant I lived in Italy for a year!

Forgive me for treating this news with a degree of speculation but there is a huge difference between allocating 7000 seats on CTA aircraft and actually filling them. Frankly I will be amazed if this comes off. In the same paper, the government stated that the Girne bypass will be finished by March.... I rest my case !!

I think I may be becoming a bit cynical in my 'middle' age

Come on guys - mirACLES sometimes happen, and let's face it, they are the only things that will save us all. So believe, and do not doubt, and then if it happens you can rejoice, and if it doesn;t you can say 'I told you so' but don't get negative before the first plane even hits the runway.

Have a good day!

I don't know why they are wooing a new group (Italians) of tourists to TRNC when they have hundreds of thousands of Brits who come to Cyprus every year, only they go to RoC instead of coming here. They obviously know and like Cyprus, so getting them here shouldn't be as difficult as getting total "strangers" to come here. If the cost difference between flying and staying here, compared to RoC was made too good to refuse, there would be more tourists than enough from the UK.

TRNCVaughan has the obvious answer; except that he has omitted to mention that TRNC standards might not meet the criteria that current ROC tourists expect.

What I fail to understand is why Turkish Cypriot airlines, who are banned from direct flights to TRNC, bother to function at all, especially in consideration of the massive losses that seem to be publicised all too frequently.

Why can they not amalgamate, or profit share, with Turkish Airlines who can fly direct to Ercan?

Perhaps I am missing something, in which case would someone kindly elucidate?

Hi Roy,

I thought the standards problem was a given. The place needs cleaning-up and a lick of paint, all-round.

CTA and Turkish Airlines both fly direct to TRNC, neither fly non-stop. CTA needs privatizing and competition, in that order.

Hans, The product was being sold in Germany at a heavily subsidised rate through a German supermarket chain. The tourism ministry were making the worst cheap resort in the Med. look expensive and as is often the way in the TRNC they did not consult the travel proffesionals with market knowledge in the TRNC.

There were Italians staying at the Artemis Hotel ,Bafra Beach last year .Direct flights were trialled throughout May,June and July.Someone also told me it was the same from Germany;but only saw a few Germans on the East Coast last year.I think they normally stay around Salamis area.

The more tourists the better! I believe the promised flights are for the summer months only, and as regards German tourists there is a company specialising in bringing them over and they do a good job. Not sure it is 7,000 but I could find out if it were REALLYa vital to know.

Personally, the more tourists we can get here to boost the economy the better. The fact that this place does not really know about P.R. is a shame, but maybe slowly, slowly they will learn.

However many Italians come, 1 is better than none.

Re message 27:

Actually I am an eternal optimist but I am also a realist. Have seen too many empty promises from the government to actually believe that they might come through one day.

I would be absolutely delighted if they came in their droves, but until the government gets a grip, cuts corruption and most importantly, cleans the place up, then I fear that tourism in the TRNC will die on its feet. With the eurozone being so expensive for tourists, there will probably never be a better opportunity to boost tourist numbers. However, the TRNC needs to change if it is to be successful.

Sorry, but Germans DO come! If you want statistics, I can supply them, but I assure you that Kalaedeskop Turizm has been bringing German tourists here for years, and many return time and time again.

Just goes to show that in every nation there are differing expectations, and also difference faces of Cyprus to be seen.

20 odd foreigners (think they were german) stayed at the Pia Bella 2 weeks ago, they were always first down for breakfast . Think they were on a walking holiday always wore boots and anoraks.

National habits don't seem to change. Wherever I have stayed in the past the Germans were first down to breakfast but depositing their towels on chairs around the pool to ensure they got the best positions.

You needed to get up with the lark to beat them to it. Personally, can't be bothered.

As to walking holidays - this is a great place for that, away from the new concrete jungles and up into the hills and the 'real' Cyprus.

The TRNC likes to put out regular bits of propoganda to keep the voters living in hope

Every year it's "direct flight are about to start" and "this year x tourists will be coming from y", "the water pipeline is about to start" "no more electricty outages" etc etc

Does anyone still believe any of this?

Never fear, Brits are equally good at that stunt! When I stayed at the Dome, they would deposit their towels before breakfast, go out for the day, then expect to find their towels still on the sunbeds on their return!

Love it, Kaiserphil! Serves anyone right if they are trying to get one up on someone else. I call it selfish! If towels disappear, tough cheese! Holidays are for having fun, not practising one-upmanship! Actually reminds me of a time on a ferry boat with the French - that was a day for the use of elbows and no othewr tactics. These national differences are intewresting to observe. As I say, I am just too lazy to join in - nothing is worth THAT much! But 'bon chance' to those who enjoy it!

Roll on the Italians, Germans, Bavarians, Russians, old uncle tom cobley and all - anything that brings an interest in North Cyprus, brings in a couple of bob, keeps businesses running and does good .
