in the right hand corner we have:

the effective leaders of the eu france and germany

with those southern states getting large eu payoffs, new europe not making waves,

and the rest of the strong antis...austria, greece, cyprus-nicosia and the netherlands

in the left hand corner there is:

britain and the swedish foreign minister, myself and you too grey

Just read an article where Germany are now saying that it is imperative that Turkey join the E.U.

grey,

I'm sure you have, but the thing about press is it reflects a variety of views

the killer for me was sarkosy's notorious 2007 "inappropriate" interview

together with more recent damning remarks by angela merkel...

unless you believe that lame-duck pm gordon brown "really" controls the eu

a thing that continues to mystify me is members of '44 talking up turkey's

wallowing eu "application" and the lack of any sign of a "cyprus agreement"

coz if either became reality '44 punters could lose far more than their shirts

Possibly Stewart, although it mentions France on the negative.

Thanks

hmmm...

well a very portentious-seeming bbc news article, thanks

cannot see that germany does really endorse turkey's membership

and a large helping of euro-speak

eg priveliged status really means "no membership but don't get upset"

look at it this way, the german voter

has has in mind three million turks living in the country

and misguided though I think they are, fears a new wave of immigration

perhaps the stakes are even bigger than that:

the chilling prospect of turkey and uk outvoting the franco-germans

as regards cyprus deals,

I'd equally give that "concept" a qualified endorsement too but...

RE msg 10:

The Turks have lived in Germany for decades but they have no citizen privileges, they are 'Gasterbeiders' Guests of the country in other words.

If Turkey get into the EU they would have all the priveleges of EU citizens. Would the German voters like this????

no bob,

most german voters are deeply suspicious so it cannot happen in our lifetimes

while for france, millions of french of algerian descent live in particular quarters

of the big cities and mentally they are lumped together with the turks, sad but true

and very similar underlying antagonisms relate to the cyprus meetings programme

...and let's leave it to the naiive the deluded and the mischievous to big it all up

Roxyrob.

'The Turks have lived in Germany for decades but they have no citizen privileges,'

Article.

"Meanwhile, five deputies of Turkish descent entered Federal Parliament, and a Turk, Serkan Toren, was elected parliamentarian from FDP for the first time.

Also Mehmet Kilic entered Parliament from Green Party for the first time while Ekin Deligoz --who was elected parliamentarian for the fourth time from Green Party-- nominated for party's group deputy chairperson."

All second generation Turkish immigrants have automatic right to German citizenship .

All Turkish immigrants/guest workers have the right to bring their families into Germany to be with them. This caused the Turkish population in Germany to double.

law is being brought out that will allow Turks to have dual nationality after becoming German.

3/4 of all Turks in EU live in Germany. From the article below ,maybe Germans think they have done enough without more on EU entry.

do go back and ask yourselves the original questions:

...why would turkey apply for eu membership this time if it is all doomed?

perhaps the turkish and eu member governments have their own reasons for this charade

why do so many members of cyprus 44 refer to a cyprus agreement as a cyprus solution?

compromise agreements are often painful to put into effect with losers as well as gainers

luckily for many in north cyprus, no sign yet of any breakthroughs, even on the far horizon

Andre,

Wasnt Turkeys first application to the E.U. in 1959 and that was before the Turkish intervention,

I can quite believe that grey!

while turkey has had a free trade agreement with the eu since the 1980's

the present "negociations" go back years too

marocco applied to join about 1986 but were told they are african not european

no such problem with south cyprus, even if it is technically part of the asian continent

the argument has always been that the newer poorer member had much to gain

...in the form of payoffs

although I believe that polish farmers only got half what they originally hoped for,

supposedly due to german determination

I now think british membership has been "unfortunate" for the uk

while for states like turkey (or are there any other states like turkey?!?)

there are vast social and political implications all round

"talking-up" change and uncertainty though, is the stock-in-trade

of diverse gc infiltrators and ambivalent chancers on this north cyprus forum

my predictions for 2010: no deal, no eu, no major changes

grey message 18:

a very balanced article from the bbc written way back in 2006 but still valid

interestingly at the foot of the page a more recent item about that poor bloke who suffered hiccups for years,

...could just as easily describe turkey's relationship problems with the countries of the eu,

though a few cynics might argue this is rather more than just "hiccups"
