The Cyprus negotiations process enters into a new phase.

President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias began an intensive round of talks this morning within the framework of the negotiations continuing between the two sides since September 2008.

The intensive round is being held in two phases.

The first round of meetings is taking place today, and will continue tomorrow and on Wednesday and the second round will be held on the 25th, 26th and 27th of January.

The negotiations will mainly focus on governance and power-sharing, the economy, EU matters and the property issue.

The Unites Nations says the intensive talks create an opportunity for the two leaders to achieve important progress towards a solution.

Hi All,

I have been following the talks since Sept 2008 and have noticed that before the two leaders meet it is announced what they are going to talk about. Then after they have met it is announced what they spoke about but not what was the outcome of the meeting was.Does anyone know if they have agreed on anything or are they just engaging in a love in,

Paul.

lets face it.

1.tcs wanted timeframes for talks, gcs said no

2.tcs offered 4/5 way talks,gcs said no

3.tcs invited outside help,un/eu,gcs said no

4.tcs offered a set of ideas in a package, gcs said no(even before talks started)

5.tcs said yes to annan, gcs said no.

gcs are obviously well within their rights to turn these things down, but then they say to the world about the "intransigence"and non flexibility of the tcs.??

Eroglu has the right idea,2 states that live side by side and co-operate and intigrate when neccesary,if the truths known a lot of GCs would probably favour this too!Just too many hurdles and complicated issues to become one people again in my view.

The problem is Bill, both have said they are committed to reunifying the island so neither will walk away now,the election in april will give an opportunity for a natural break. If (when) they finally realise the situation is impossible, agreed solution for two separate states wouldnt take very long to put together,Gcs and Tcs land exchange, any further GC land they should rightfully be compensated for,the UN to come out and announce that the 2 sides have tried everything but in vain and are prepared to live side by side in their own space,i'm sure relations between them would only improve over the years if this happened.EU lift embargoes and TRNC becomes a member of EU as and when Turkey does. This would be a major compromise for the Gcs though, however this would be the EUs problem then due to them allowing them to become members whilst the island was still split. If they held a referendem north and south to ask the people would they like separate states i reckon the vast majority would.!

contd. Gcs get varosha and Turkey opens its ports etc to gcs in return. All imho.I hope they can sort it out because in this day and age its totally unfair to see both sides suffer and continue under the status quo.

Sporty, i believe you are right with your comments.

In my experience the words "intransigence" and "non flexibility" belong to the Cypriot Greeks. I also know that there has always been an excessively strong lobbying group in the south against reunification, all coming from the businessmen and in particular the hotel and resort owners, who fear that they will lose most of their current clientele to the north's lovely resorts! This lobbying group has great influence.

Having said that i also know that there are agendas from both sides which still haven't been brought to the table ... so all in all, discussions are great but there is a hell of a long way to go.

In my humble opinion it will be another 30 years before anything close to a reasonable agreement will be reached ... but i would truly love to be surprised!

The "property issue" that is often overlooked, is what happens to the price of property if there is a settlement , and both sides are in the EU

Answer: Property in south decreases, property in north increases, i.e if you are a RoC private owner, your principal asset has now lost 20-40% of it's value. If you are a business that owns property and has bank loans, your loan to asset ratio falls off a cliff.

The RoC will resist any sort of a solution for as long and hard as they possibly can, economically they simply can not afford a solution

Re message 11

Hi Paul,

I would love the island to be unified again but I have got a feeling they will settle on a two state solution at some point..

either way will be good for Cyprus, Turkey and Greece and the EU.

I think both leaders know that too..

RE Message 13

Mark, property will always increase in value in the long term where-ever it is, I dont think the government would be that short-sighted.. but you may be right..

Petez,

Re-unification is a definite no,no and i for one hope it never happens.Lets just give the North a fair chance without the shackles around its ankles.Lets think of the locals for once. They may have voted yes last time. But they sure as hell wouldnt vote yes again,

Paul.

There will never be an agreement I have been listening to this for years and years now and nothing ever becomes of it. Why would the locals need a settlement now as many of them now work in the south and have nights out there now so no point. It would be the end of the Cyprus that we have all come to love especially with direct flights bringing in the lager brigade that the south has become famous for in the summer months. All we need is the embargoes lifted so that at least some exporting could be done to help the economy, rather than paying the middlemen from turkey that take the bigger slice of the cake.

You must be the only person that doesnt want direct flights.

For most of us , Roll on direct flights and low cost airlines.

turkey today stated ,it will never give up the kktc even if this means it will stop them entering the eu.

As this is the greeks main objective ,then yes the talks never even began ,not for the gc,s anyhow.

the turkish cypriots have always and still are saying they are here to tango ,but it takes two too tango, and

it seams the greek cypriots are not sure what they want, except the mainlanders out.

the greek cypriots want it all , no room at the inn for tcs , people come on here and say theyre all cypriots ,theyre not , gcs and tcs , lets not forget why turkey intervened because if they had,nt it would be a province of greece , do you honestly think the island will unite ? imagine the greeks looking at the turkish war memorials ,burial grounds , statues of ataturk , mosques , it will be a partition much like ireland IMHO, theyre economy is failling since they were allowed into the eu on the back of greece , turkey holds the key to so many pots of gold ,with or without the eu .

“It takes two to tango”. The Turkish Minister of State - Chief Negotiator for talks with the European Union Egemen Bagis has said that it takes two to tango to reach a peaceful settlement in Cyprus. “We are on the dance floor, waiting for the Greek Cypriot Side to join us”, he said.

Presidential Spokesperson has voiced the Turkish Side’s disappointment over Greece’s attitude towards the Cyprus negotiation process. “Instead of contributing positively to the process, it adopted an attitude which created disappointment”, Hasan Erçakıca said at his weekly press briefing today.

The General Secretary of the Republican Turkish Party has said the chapter of Governance and Power Sharing includes issues forming the basis of the Cyprus problem and that the Turkish Side has put forward creative proposals to remove the obstacles in the way of a solution.

Stressing that the solution of the Cyprus problem is the main priority of his party, Kutlay Erk said that the CTP will not put the B-Plan into its agenda before all options for a solution are tried.
