Wow. It is a big place and has many faces. You have a strong muslim face in the south, and the orangutans in the north! You can see it all, depends on budget and what you want.

Personally, I think you should surf the net to see what Malaysia has to offer - dol you want beach, exploration, town, country, modern., ethnic or even a tour to see it all.

Also, if you are going from U.K, best use a package of a good company. Cheaper and you are looked after. I see that you are young, fit and artistic, so why not go with a young group ?

I have seen much of the place (but haven't been there for a decade) but loved it all.

Any questions, do ask, but I think that your local travel agent ande the web combined could give you all the info you need.

Good luck. Oh, and if you need an escort - I am a good mother figure!!!!!!!!

It's a great country, but as said above, it depends what you want

An highly recommend the sleeper train from Singapore up to the north east of the country, where there are some lovely islands, such as Perentian

Penang is great for temple watching etc, but not as good a coast as the east

Excellent cheap food everywhere

Only thing I would say is that Thailand probably has more to offer and is cheaper

Penang is now totally spoilt unless you want a Phuket lookalike with fake watches and T shirts.

If you want to tour do include the Cameron Highlands, the area is beautiful with rain forests and waterfalls.

Langkawi Island is breathtaking and depending on your budget fab hotels from 5* to reasonable. We stayed at the Burjaya Resort 3 years ago, it is built in a forest and is so big that you get to your room on a bus !

Push the boat out and get a beachside chalet, built on stilts in the sea, it was amazing. More expensive though is Kota Kinabalu but the beaches there are fabulous.

I have to agree though with Mark, Thailand is much cheaper and is still lovely if you stay away from Pattaya or Phuket. Ko Samui is where to go if you want peace and quiet.

If you intend to stay in a city then go to KL. We stayed at Corus Hotel accross the road from the twin Pretoras Towers. Great city. We used Corus hotel because they offered free limosine transport to and from airport. Best hotel is the golden horses or the imperial within the twin towers.

Visit China Town at night for fantastic market with dodgy fake goods

Been to both Malaysia and Thailand, and hope to go back again later this year. Would agree that Thailand probably has more to offer, although we found Malyasia (or at least that parts that we visited) beautiful. Would highly recommend both.

Enjoy, whichever you choose - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

Really depends on what you want. If you just want beach resort then you could go anywhere in world and see the same things.

However if you want some real adventure go across to Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo, they are part of Malaysia. Many years ago we stayed at Tanju Aru Resort in Sabah, later made (in)famous as hotel that Nick Leason fled to. If you are really fit you can do the 2 day hike up Mount Kinabalu. In right season there is excellent white water rafting. Plus one of the few places where you can still wander in pristine rain forest.

The best bit that must not be missed is a visit to the Orang Utan sanctuary at Sepilok.

Did not do Sarawak but you can do the trek up river and stay in the traditional huts, although now a bit too commercialised.

Both Kuala Lumpor and Singapore are cities that must be seen although again now very commercial.

happy feet if you fly to kl the airport is nearly 50 miles from the city so i suggest to have the hotel booked so they can come to get you. in kl most of the hotels are 5 stars hyatt marriott and shangry-la are all beautiful we stayed at ciro's hotel (also 5 stars). penang we stayed @ ras-sasayan (shangry-la group) in ferringhi beach, in langkawi the dati hotel is magnificent and as lilli said is a duty free island visit singapore if you can and take the ferry to pucket island langkawi is one of the 99 island in malesya.

KL you can get round in 4 days, take a city tour. We stayed in a boutique hotel right in China town, very basic but clean sheets each day, newly refurbished. Flew AirAsia to Chang Mai, wonderful place to walk around, trips to elephant camps, river rafting (not white river) and temples, flights very cheap. KL you get a taxi ticket at airport, let them know where you are going, you pay them and only tip driver if you want to. Agree Thailand better than Malaysia - enjoy your trip.
