Is there anywhere to get help and advice on dog cruelty?

Near my house there are 7 dogs in filthy cages. Today I could not stand the sound of their pitiful cries any longer and went over to feed them.

I was utterly shocked at the sight of these pitiful but beautiful creatures. I know they were being fed occasionally during the hunting season but these dogs can now barely walk and are so thin that, even as an animal lover, I feel that they would be better off being put to sleep.

They are on the owners' land (he's a TC) which I know could be a problem, and their excuse will be that they are hunting dogs but who can I contact about it. Half of them don't have water and the other half have green water to drink.

Please advise me. Thanks

Lilli

Ever since the publication of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species in 1859 we have known that human beings are related by common descent to all other animals.

Surely we owe a duty of care to our animal cousins?

That is appalling. I found this website and hope it might help. Failing that give KAR a ring and they might be able to advise. God how I hate humans at times!!!!!

I remember that there was a board member a couple of years ago that asked for advice on animal cruelty here in Northern cyprus.

The member had been to the police station and had no joy in gettin any action. Another member then posted a link and suggested they print it of and take it to the police station.....if I remember rightly it was a copy of "Section 47 cruelty to animals under the legal code of Northern Cyprus"....again if I remember rightly the police did investigate.

I'm afraid I am not a computor whizz kid.....but maybe a member who is could attempt to find the posting with the link.

I know for a fact that there is still a law on the books here, dating back to the British Days,(1957 I believe) and it states categorically that anyone harming an animal or prac\tising any form of cruelty to any animal can be fined and/or sent to jail for three months. The police know of this law, and you could ask them to step in, but.... if you do, be prepared that the offender could be someone's cousin and you are a foreigner, and there may be no action taken - except perhaps against you! That latter is only surmising, but I do have a copy of the law somewhere on my computer. Another person who has a copy is the owner of the Dog Kennels at Malatya. If you feel strongly, go to the police and remind them of the law and see what happens. Or again, would one of the local vets be a source of information and advice?

Like most things, Lilli, you have to have proof! Photos! Witnesses! etc, etc. That is why no one can actually catch the bloke who regularly poisons dogs in Karsiyaka! Most people know who it is, but he is never seen or caught. With cruelty to animals you must have some evidence. That is probably why the police turn people away. If a dog is looking mangy can youy prove the owner did it! They could say they have just rescued it and are going to make it better.

Unfortunately, dropping dogs on you is cruel, but not punishable by law. The cruelty has to be against the animal! Not the human who becomes the victim of the dumping.

Still you had one miracle today - maybe you will get the second one tomorrow, and all will be well (until the next time when we allknow you willbe FIRMER.

They are "property" and are not protected under the law. they are subject only to the owner. Sad but true.

FYI don't know if this will help some of you but there is an animal shelter in the big industrial estate in Lefkosa i know they take in animals, how much and how often i'm not sure of but it might be worth investigating as i know KAR is full to bursting.

There is an organisation here which can and has removed animals from people and prosecuted them, i read about them a year or so ago. I cant remember the name of them though. I think they were the ones that prosecuted the farmers in Lefkosa, for cruelty, they threw a donkey over a hedge etc. Try looking it up on internet there must be a lead somewhere, i will try now for you.

No its not Kar, its in Nicossia, they do shelter but as expected crammed full but they may be able to put the dogs on some sort of adoption register, look them up and see what you think, the tel no is an emergency no but the site does have a contact form.
